April 4, 2013 – Broadcom, a global wired and wireless semiconductor company, and SK Telecom jointly announced the industry's first 5G Wi-Fi hotspot router. SK Telecom integrated Broadcom's BCM4708 and BCM4360 into its latest platform to realize fast and powerful 5G Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling it to provide customers with more stable connectivity by offloading data traffic to an IP network.

Choi Jin-sung, Head of SK Telecom’s ICT Technology Institute, stated, “SK Telecom is doing its utmost to expand the distribution of 802.11ac (5G Wi-Fi) hotspot routers in Korea,” and expressed his aspirations, saying, “SK Telecom will cooperate with Broadcom, a pioneer in the 5G Wi-Fi field, to provide differentiated technologies and services suitable for the Gigabit Internet environment that has been growing rapidly since 2013, thereby aiming to provide customers with a more upgraded Wi-Fi Internet experience.”

In addition, Dino Bekis, Senior Director of Product Marketing for Broadcom’s Wireless Connectivity Combo Business Unit, stated, “The surge in internet data traffic over mobile networks is causing cellular network saturation, which can lead to instability or slow speeds when watching videos or streaming content on mobile devices.” He added, “SK Telecom aims to resolve these issues by integrating 5G Wi-Fi into its latest hotspot router platform, and this will play a key role in providing the optimal experience for customers by offloading data to Wi-Fi.”
