Freescale Launches MCU for Vehicle Lightweighting and Body Network Simplification
Three New MCUs Unveiled for the Latest Qorivva and S12 MagniV Portfolios
Freescale Semiconductor (Korea Country Manager Yeonho Hwang, hereinafter Freescale), a leader in the field of microcontrollers and digital networking processors, held a new product presentation at Freescale Korea in Jamsil, Seoul on the 7th and unveiled three new products in the Qorivva and S12 MagniV portfolios, which are microcontroller (MCU) product families for automotive body networks.
The new product announced by Freescale is an MCU developed to address the automotive industry's needs for high-bandwidth networks, enhanced data security, functional safety, and reduced energy consumption, taking integration with automotive body application functions to a new level.
As the number of electronic control units (ECUs) installed in a vehicle increases, so does connectivity. A typical vehicle includes over 68 kg of copper wiring and thousands of meters of length for networking. Integrating more functions into key ECUs and increasing the intelligence of satellite nodes, such as modules for vehicle doors or electric motors, not only reduces the number of installed ECUs and the amount of connected wiring but also helps improve fuel efficiency by eliminating the weight of unnecessary wiring.
Along with the demand for eco-friendly vehicles, compliance with the ISO 26262 functional safety standard for vehicle bodies, including critical functions such as exterior lighting and car wipers, is being promoted. Furthermore, as wireless communication for vehicles becomes more widespread, there is also an increasing demand for security devices installed in automotive MCUs to protect intellectual property and block unauthorized access to vehicle networks or potential risks.
Freescale’s new Qoribar MPC5748G and S12 Magnivi S12ZVL/S12ZVC MCUs are technologies complementary to the Qoribar central controller, which performs roles such as a centralized data security network gatekeeper, intelligent power management, and Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) support for functional safety, as well as the S12 Magnivi satellite nodes, which include an integrated power supply and a communication transceiver embedded in the smart mixed-signal MCU. This highly integrated technology enables the simplification of automotive network design, vehicle weight reduction, increased production efficiency, and a reduction in board area by up to 30%.

"Through the intelligence of automotive central communication controllers, Freescale places great importance on reducing electrical and mechanical energy consumption as well as securing automotive networks. Freescale’s latest MCU product family enables OEMs to reduce the weight of copper wiring and board components by up to 9 kg and decrease vehicle body weight, thereby contributing significantly to improved fuel efficiency."
Qorivva MPC5748G MCU
The Qoriba MPC5748G MCU is a single-chip solution for next-generation Central Body Control and Gateway applications. It features an excellent level of integration of innovative low-power management modes, functional safety support, and robust security capabilities. In addition, it provides the widest set of networking peripherals on the market, along with support for Ethernet AVB (Audio Video Bridging), FlexRay™, MLB (Media Local Bus), USB, CAN FD (Flexible Data Rate), and 18 LIN (Local Interconnect Network) controllers. High performance through a multi-core architecture, up to 6 MB of flash memory, and 768 KB of RAM play a crucial role in efficient data transmission as well as eliminating communication bottlenecks.
The central body control module consumes significant time in a low-power monitoring state. The Qoribar MPC5748G MCU features a low-power unit mode, which reduces peak current consumption by nearly 30% compared to previous generation devices during periodic wake-up execution, thereby enhancing functionality even in low-power conditions. Additionally, analog comparators operating in standby mode and pre-attached networking meet the requirements for next-generation power ranges.
The Qoriba MPC5748G MCU is Freescale’s SafeAssure functional safety solution developed in accordance with the ISO 26262 standard. It provides built-in safety features such as self-testing and end-to-end error correction coding, extensive automated safety software such as AUTOSAR OS and MCAL (Microcontroller Abstraction Layer) drivers, and various safety-related resources, and was developed targeting ASIL B devices.
The Qoribar MPC5748G MCU provides a hardware security module for data protection and ensures secure communication and flash updates through the AES encryption algorithm, secure memory, and secure boot features.
S12 MagniV S12ZVL/S12ZVC MCU
The highly integrated Magnivi S12ZVL and S12ZVC MCUs are applied to enhance the intelligence of Controller Area Network (CAN) end nodes or LIN nodes, contributing to automotive OEMs optimizing their entire body networking systems. The S12 Magnivi S12ZVL/S12ZVC MCUs enable the design of the smallest possible CAN end nodes (using S12ZVC) or LIN nodes (using S12ZVL), reducing printed circuit board size by approximately 30%. Automotive systems can directly connect high-voltage signals and power supplies to the S12 Magnivi MCU, integrating additional discrete components, improving system quality, and reducing system design and manufacturing complexity.
The S12 MagNiVi portfolio ensures scalability for automotive electronic platform designs across various applications, along with CAN and LIN connectivity options, flash memory capacities ranging from 8 to 192 KB, and diverse package options between 32 and 64 pins. The S12 MagNiVi S12ZVL/S12ZVC MCUs are the first of Freescale's 16-bit automotive MCUs to be included in Freescale's SafeAssure functional safety program and were developed in compliance with the ISO 26262 standard.
Freescale plans to showcase samples of the Quarrybar MPC5748G and S12 Magnivi S12ZVL in the second quarter of this year and launch the products in the second half of 2014. Samples of the S12 Magnivi S12ZVC are scheduled to be showcased in the third quarter of this year, with product launch scheduled for the end of 2014.
Freescale SafeAssure Program
Freescale’s SafeAssure functional safety program was developed to help system manufacturers more easily achieve compliance with ISO 26262 and IEC 61508 functional safety standards. This program is comprised of extensive supporting materials centered around Freescale's hardware and software solutions, which are optimally designed to support the implementation of functional safety.
