
June 28, 2013 – Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-kwak) announced the launch of the LTM4649, a 10A step-down µModule® regulator in a 9mm x 15mm x 4.92mm BGA (ball grid array) package that delivers higher operating efficiency and lower temperature rise characteristics. The LTM4649 requires no heatsink or airflow at maximum power supply in 0ºC to 83ºC ambient temperature and operates at maximum efficiency of 86% without output current derating (at 10A, 5VIN–12VIN, 1.5VOUT). Output current decreases to only 4A at maximum 100ºC ambient temperature and to 2A at 400LFM. The LTM4649 steps down input power ranging from 4.5V to 16V to output voltage in the range of 0.6V to 3.3V. The LTM4649 features a differential remote sense amplifier that compensates for voltage droop caused by circuit board trace impedance and regulates load voltage with +/- 1.5% accuracy across all line, load, and temperature (-40ºC to 125ºC) conditions.
The LTM4649 provides input and output clock signals to enable precise current sharing in multiple devices for multi-phase operation up to maximum 40A load. Multi-phase operation not only reduces input and output ripple but also reduces the number of input and output capacitors. Applications include communications, industrial, aerospace, and test equipment requiring PoL (point-of-load) conversion at 12V or 5V input.
The LTM4649 can be synchronized with an external clock in the frequency range of 400kHz to 750kHz. Since options are provided for Burst Mode® operation for maximum conversion efficiency at light load and pulse-skip operation for lower output voltage ripple, this product offers users options to tailor circuit performance. The LTM4649 allows output voltage tracking to sequence different voltages in the system. To protect the load side, the LTM4649 features overvoltage and overcurrent protection.
