STMicroelectronics launches next-generation security microcontrollers supporting biometric system-on-card and dCVV solutions, accelerating advanced security features that support contact and contactless payment cards, ID cards, and transportation ticketing.

ST announced on the 8th that it has released the latest ST31 security microcontroller.

ST31N600, based on ST's 40nm eSTM technology, integrates additional connectivity and energy harvesting circuitry used in biometric and Dynamic Card Verification (dCVV) applications.

This enables the implementation of a battery-free smart card, providing enhanced user authentication for contactless and online transactions.

Based on the latest Arm® SecurCore™ architecture for secure microcontrollers, the ST31N600 meets EMV ISO 7816, ISO 14443, and ISO 18092 standards for contact and contactless cards, and enables designers to securely connect with various types of peripherals to introduce additional card functions.

Laurent Degauque, Senior Vice President of Marketing for ST Security Microcontrollers, said, “The ST31N600 enables support for innovative payment authentication mechanisms while being easy to use, thanks to its robust security and features. “It will be a starting point for a major leap forward for smart cards,” ST announced, stating that while unveiling this device at the Trustech 2021 exhibition, it plans to showcase biometric secure payment solutions based on STPay-Topaz-Bio and dCVV for secure online transactions.

STPay-Topaz-Bio is a ready-to-use payment solution that combines the speed and convenience of contactless transactions with the security authentication of biometric cards. This Biometric System-on-Card (BSoC) solution is based on the ST31N600 and the ultra-low-power STM32L4 microcontroller embedded in the EMV (Eurocard Mastercard Visa) module. The ST31N600 hosts payment applications, biometric template matching, and energy harvesting to power the system.

This ST31N600 product is also ideal for e-commerce payments based on dCVV technology, which dynamically regenerates code in each EMV transaction without an external battery or clock timer.
