Fairchild Semiconductor's new Motion SPM(R) 5 series provides thermal sensing and stable EMI characteristics for small appliances.

Motor control system designers need solutions that optimize efficiency while ensuring maximum reliability in harsh application environments. To meet these technical challenges, Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) has developed the SPM® 5 Smart Power Module series of three-phase MOSFET inverter solutions, providing designers with AC induction motor (ACIM) and brushless DC (BLDC) motor inverter solutions for motors up to 200 W, including fan motors, dishwasher pumps, and a variety of small industrial motors.
The new SPM 5 series consists of six fast-recovery MOSFETs and three half-bridge HVICs for gate drive. The devices offer optimized switching speeds and low electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Precision driving of low-RDS(ON) MOSFETs minimizes EMI and maximizes switching frequency. Integrated undervoltage lockout (UVLO) and thermal sensing unit (TSU) provide local protection for the SPM device, while the built-in controller IC enables real-time monitoring of the module's thermal performance.
Within the Motion SPM 5 SuperFET® series, the FSB50x60SF(S) devices are based on 600V Super Junction MOSFET technology, while the FSB50xxxA(x) devices are based on 250V/500V FRFET® technology. The SPM 5 SuperFET series is the industry's first 600V Super Junction MOSFET module solution for small appliances and small industrial drives. Both technologies offer improved robustness and a larger safe operation area (SOA) than IGBT-based power modules or single-chip solutions.
This new SPM series offers three bootstrap diodes in an ultra-small 29 mm x 12 mm package, rated for 250 V, 500 V, and 600 V operation. Their compact design and simple electrical interface make them ideal for applications requiring a small footprint, fast time-to-market, and design scalability, such as built-in motor applications, as well as a wide range of other applications where assembly space is limited. Devices in the series provide designers with the energy efficiency, compactness, and low EMI characteristics that modern applications demand.
Fairchild's motion control design tool is also available online to designers to help them calculate power loss and temperature fluctuations, optimizing heat sink selection and ultimately optimizing system cost. For more information and sample orders, please see:
