Gwangju Metropolitan City completed the construction of next-generation ITS (C-ITS) demonstration project through successful autonomous driving testing.

Gwangju Metropolitan City held a demonstration event on the 11th operating autonomous vehicles on the section from Pyeongdong Station to Bit Green Industrial Complex. The demonstration event held this time was conducted to conclude the next-generation ITS (C-ITS) demonstration project that had been in progress for the past two years.

In the demonstration event, the autonomous vehicle traversed the section at a maximum speed of 50km/h, and successfully completed the demonstration while receiving △key signal information △incident information △weather information to support safe driving through ITS.

In particular, the demonstration also showcased providing various traffic information such as △road work sections △electronic billboard information to autonomous vehicles and risk information for C-ITS services between vehicles including △emergency vehicle approach alerts △forward vehicle emergency braking.

C-ITS is a system that provides traffic services as vehicles drive while continuously communicating with road infrastructure or other vehicles.

Gwangju City invested a total of 25 billion won (national funding 15 billion won, local funding 10 billion won) and commenced the demonstration project for 'next-generation autonomous cooperative intelligent transportation system' (hereinafter 'C-ITS') in March 2020 for improving stability and efficiency, completing it at the end of last year.

Kim Jae-sik, Director of Transportation and Construction at Gwangju Metropolitan City, stated "In line with changes in the transportation environment in the era of the fourth industrial revolution, when commercial services based on autonomous cooperative driving become commercialized, the stability and efficiency of transportation will be greatly improved."
