Naver is accelerating its efforts to enhance its global technological competitiveness by recruiting young scholars who are attracting global attention for their outstanding research achievements in the fields of AI and search.

Naver announced on the 24th that it recently recruited Professor Yoon Kim of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Professor Karl Stratos (Lee Jang-seon) of Rutgers University as Naver Scholars.

Naver Scholar is a program where professors and researchers from universities and research institutes in the U.S. and Europe work at their affiliated institutions and lead the development of next-generation AI technologies and search services at Naver Search US, Naver Search's AI center in the U.S.

First, Professor Kim Yun-hyung received his Ph.D. in computer engineering from Harvard University and is currently working as an assistant professor at MIT.

In 2014, Professor Kim published a paper on the application of convolutional neural network (CNN), a type of deep learning technology, to the field of natural language processing (NLP).It attracted the attention of the academic and AI industry.

Not only has the paper been cited over 12,000 times worldwide, but Professor Kim's research on character-aware language models and OpenNMT machine translation is also widely used in the industry and is considered to be leading research innovation in the field of deep learning.

Professor Karl Skratos, who was also recruited along with him and holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Columbia University, is also an expert in the field of AI. He is currently an assistant professor at Rutgers University, where he is researching unsupervised learning methods and the development of knowledge use models.

Professor Karl served as the chair of the machine learning committee at the ACL, ENMLP, and NAACL natural language processing societies, and also has practical experience in overseeing the introduction of cutting-edge deep learning technologies into the Natural Language Understanding (NLU) service at Bloomberg's Natural Language Processing (NLP) research team.

In particular, Professor Karl achieved great success by reestablishing the statistical theory of interdependent information, which is the foundation of information theory, thereby fundamentally changing the direction of numerous AI research methodologies based on information theory.

In recognition of these research achievements, he has received numerous awards, including the Google Faculty Research Award (2020).

The two newly recruited professors, along with Kim Yong-beom, the responsible leader in charge of AI technology development at Naver Search US, plan to focus on advancing next-generation AI search technology that will be integrated throughout Naver's search services.

Kim, who joined Naver last September, is considered a world-renowned expert in conversational AI, having overseen the development of core AI technologies for Microsoft Cortana and Amazon Alexa.
