Fairchild Semiconductor Launches Next-Generation TinyBuck™ POL Regulator Family

Power supply designers for servers, tablets, laptops, communications, gaming, and general-purpose point of load (POL) regulation applications are constantly seeking ways to further improve the efficiency of their designs to meet energy specifications, extend battery life, and reduce total maintenance costs. To help designers address these challenges, Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) has launched the next-generation TinyBuck™ regulator family, which consists of integrated POL regulator products combining fixed-on-time PWM controllers and drivers with high-side and low-side MOSFETs.
The FAN23xx product family enables end-user applications to achieve much higher efficiency across a very wide load range. This is made possible through the following multiple optimizations:
A precisely tuned gate drive circuit with optimized gate drive current and dead time for each specific component provides 2 percent higher maximum efficiency compared to competitors.
Maximizing low-load efficiency with a fixed on-time architecture utilizing PFM (pulse frequency modulation)
In addition, further optimizations are being made as follows to improve thermal performance and system robustness:
• Achieves reduced switch node ring and optimized wide duty cycle by utilizing Fairchild’s PowerTrench® MOSFET technology with shielded gate technology
• Achieves outstanding thermal performance by minimizing parasitic inductance and resistance using advanced packaging technology
TinyBuck regulator products can operate at a switching frequency of up to 1.5 MHz, enabling customers to achieve high efficiency while simultaneously reducing the number of required inductors and capacitors (LC). Devices in this product family can achieve the same efficiency as equivalent discrete solutions operating at half the switching frequency.
For example, the FAN2306 can achieve 92.5 percent efficiency using a 1.2 μH inductor at a switching frequency of 500 KHz when fully loaded, with a 12 V input and a 1.2 V output. The same device can achieve 90 percent efficiency when operated at 1 MHz with the same duty cycle using a 0.56 μH inductor. Since 6A, 10A, and 15A devices can be flexibly used with a single footprint, designers can increase or decrease current levels in their own systems without having to change the board layout.
In addition, this next-generation TinyBuck regulator family supports online design tools, providing designers with easy-to-use tools to improve design productivity and shorten time-to-market.
