TI Launches High-Power LED Driver for Automotive and General-Purpose Area Lighting

TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr) July 23, 2013 – TI (CEO Kent Chon) announced the launch of the TPS92690, a high-power multi-topology DC/DC LED driver. The new TPS92690 offers adjustable switching frequency and current sense threshold functionality, enabling low EMI (electromagnetic interference) and flexible design for automotive headlight, fog light, and general-purpose area lighting applications. Additionally, the TPS92690 is an N-channel MOSFET controller with integrated low-side current sensing capability, supporting boost (step-up) or boost/buck (SEPIC, Cuk, flyback) LED driver topologies. The TPS92690 DC/DC LED controller supports various features enabling designers to optimize their systems. Through adjustable switching frequency (up to 2MHz) and current sense threshold adjustment, LED drive electronics can be optimized for compact size, high efficiency, or a compromise between the two. Individual PWM (pulse-width modulation) inputs and analog inputs interfaced with a common dimming control technique allow LED current adjustment and thermal foldback implementation. The converter switching frequency can be set using an internal oscillator, and the switching frequency can be synchronized with other converters in the design using an external clock. Low-side current sensing enables low-EMI topology design such as Cuk converters, and single-wire wiring to the LED load can be maintained.
The TPS92690 is the latest product in TI's LED driver portfolio, which includes the LM3466, LM3409, and LM3421/3/4 DC/DC LED drivers.
Key Features and Benefits of TPS92690
• Supports AEC-Q100 certified automotive-grade or commercial-grade devices
• Operates with 4.5V~75V input voltage range, enabling implementation of boost, SEPIC, Cuk, and flyback topologies for various types of LED applications
• Adjustable low-side current sensing (50mV~500mV) enables analog dimming control and minimizes power loss
• Protection features including under-voltage lockout (UVLO), LED overvoltage, cycle-by-cycle current limiting, and thermal shutdown protect the system from faults and abnormal operation
Availability, Package, and Pricing
The TPS92690 is available in volume through TI and authorized distributors and is offered in a 16-pin PowerPad™ TSSOP package. Pricing is $1.55 per unit at 1,000-unit quantity.
