Samsung Electronics is pursuing innovation in mobile product development while taking the lead in reducing ocean pollution.

Samsung Electronics announced on the 4th that it will use eco-friendly materials made from recycled marine waste in its Galaxy devices, starting with new products to be unveiled at 'Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2022' on the 9th.

Samsung Electronics has successfully developed discarded fishing nets, also known as "ghost nets," into a material that can be used in smart devices.

This is one of the plans to realize 'Galaxy for the Planet,' an eco-friendly vision for the Galaxy ecosystem announced in August last year.

Approximately 640,000 tons of fishing nets are discarded worldwide each year, leaving them unattended for centuries, threatening marine life and damaging coral reefs and natural habitats.

Ultimately, it disrupts the natural ecosystem and affects the supply of food and water resources for humanity.

Samsung Electronics aims to minimize its environmental impact by recycling collected fishing nets into materials for smartphone components and motivate Galaxy device users to pursue more sustainable lifestyles.

In the future, materials recycled from marine waste will be used in smartWe plan to expand the application to the entire MX business division lineup, not just the phone.

We also plan to continue to discover and use eco-friendly materials such as plastics made from recycled post-consumer materials (PCM) and recycled paper.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics announced 'Galaxy for the Planet' as a declaration of its efforts for a more sustainable future across the entire product life cycle and business operations, from production to use and disposal.

The company also disclosed detailed goals, including: △Applying recycled materials to all new Galaxy products by 2025; △Removing plastic materials from product packaging; △Reducing standby power consumption for all smartphone chargers; and △Reducing landfill waste by recycling waste generated at MX facilities around the world.

Through this, Samsung Electronics plans to take the lead in responding to climate change and realizing a circular economy that reuses and recycles resources.

More details on materials made from recycled marine waste will be announced at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event, which will be held online at midnight on February 9 (12:00 AM on February 10) in Korean time.
