u-blox announced on the 7th that it is launching 'IoT certificate manager,' a new security service that automatically renews device certificates.

Along with u-blox's existing 'zero touch provisioning' service, this service provides connectivity to IoT cloud platforms and management capabilities for the device certificate lifecycle.

This certificate lifecycle management service is suitable for IoT devices integrated into leading IoT cloud platforms such as AWS IoT Core, Azure IoT Hub, and DPS services.

Device management and data collection are handled by these cloud services, and u-blox services can be used to manage the X.509 certificates required for device authentication effortlessly, securely, and cost-effectively.

X.509 certificates serve as the cornerstone of IoT security. Secure provisioning requires extensive experience and expertise, complex software development, and robust production line tools and processes.

As the size of the device cluster grows, the effort required for certificate management increases exponentially. In the past, certificates issued once were valid for the lifespan of the device; however, as infrastructure has become more complex and risks have risen, regulatory authorities have begun requiring more frequent renewals (annually or monthly). Failure to meet renewal deadlines can expose devices to cyber threats, disrupt services, and damage the company's reputation.
