Altera Achieves Interlaken Connectivity for Cavium OCTEON® Multicore Processors
HONG KONG, July 31, 2013 — Altera (NASDAQ: ALTR) announced today that it has achieved interoperability between its Stratix® V FPGAs and Cavium's OCTEON multicore processors using its Interlaken intellectual property (IP) cores, simplifying the device decision-making process for OEM customers by enabling simple chip-to-chip connectivity.
“Altera’s flexible Interlaken IP enabled us to quickly achieve interoperability between our two companies’ products,” said John Bromhead, director of solutions and services at Cavium. “This solution gives customers the confidence that their development efforts with Altera FPGAs and Cavium’s OCTEON processors will work seamlessly with each other. The ease of interoperability also helps our customers meet their aggressive time-to-market schedules.”
Altera® Interlaken IP cores enable high throughput and performance when workloads are intensive.
Key features include:
• Provides over 20 parameters and settings, providing the flexibility needed for system performance customization, scalability, and interoperability.
• Supports data rates and lanes up to 12.5G and x24 lanes
• Standard and customized Interlaken IP cores available
• Fully integrated IP provision including MAC, PCS, and PMA layers
• Interlaken Protocol Definition v1.2 compatible
“The flexible Altera Interlaken IP cores enable Altera FPGAs to interoperate out-of-the-box with a wide variety of SoC, ASSP, and ASIC device interfaces available on the market,” said Alex Grbic, director of product marketing at Altera. “Achieving interoperability with Cavium OCTEON devices further demonstrates the high quality of our Interlaken IP and our commitment to delivering solutions that meet our customers’ needs.”
Altera's Interlaken IP cores are ideally suited for multi-terabit routers and switches in access, carrier Ethernet, and data center applications that require IP configurability optimized for diverse traffic profiles and scalability to next-generation platforms. Interlaken IP includes Altera's technology-leading transceiver (PMA), PCS, and MAC layers. Hardening the PCS layer into Stratix V and Arria® V FPGAs enables customers to save 30 to 50 percent on FPGA logic resources. In addition to saving resources, Interlaken IP has undergone comprehensive simulation validation and has been proven to work well on both our own and customer platforms.
