NXP and Hitachi Energy join hands to improve electric vehicle performance and protect the environment.

NXP Semiconductors announced today that it is collaborating with Hitachi Energy to accelerate the adoption of silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor modules in the electric vehicle sector.

The project aims to deliver a SiC MOSFET-based solution for powertrain inverters, comprising NXP's GD3160 isolated HV gate driver and Hitachi Energy's RoadPak automotive SiC MOSFET power module.

Industry insiders expect that the joint solution, based on NXP's gate unit and Hitachi Energy's SiC load pack, will help reduce global carbon emissions by supporting long-distance driving of electric vehicles.

Hitachi Energy's high-performance automotive power semiconductor module RoadPak provides heat dissipation, low stray inductances, and long-term durability to withstand the demanding automotive environment and is a key element that enables all the features and benefits of SiC MOSFETs.

For optimal performance, the power module is paired with NXP's GD3160 high-voltage isolated gate driver, which provides fast and reliable switching and fault protection.

Hitachi EnergyBased on its technology and experience in the industrial and transportation sectors, it is developing high-density load-pack automotive SiC power modules for electric vehicle applications.

The Loadpack half-bridge power module integrates a 1200V SiC MOSFET, integrated cooling fins, and low-inductance connections into a compact form factor. Its applications range from electric buses and electric vehicles to high-performance Formula-E racing cars.

“Working with NXP Semiconductors will enable us to improve electric vehicle performance with faster, lower-loss switching,” said Rainer Kesmaier, executive vice president and general manager of the semiconductor business unit at Hitachi Energy. “Our joint solution, based on NXP’s gate units and Hitachi Energy’s SiC load packs, will enable electric vehicles to drive longer distances, helping to reduce global carbon emissions.”
