Supporting Energy Efficiency and Miniaturization, Multi-Mode·Efficiency Maximization

STMicroelectronics (hereinafter ST) has simplified the implementation of single-switch flyback converters with a maximum capacity of 50W.

ST announced on the 25th the launch of the VIPerGaN50, which integrates 650V GaN (Gallium-Nitride) power transistors to support outstanding energy efficiency and miniaturization.

Through fast integrated GaN transistors, high switching frequency is supported via flyback transformers.

Advanced high-efficiency SMPS (Switched-Mode Power Supply) can be designed by adding external components to a minimum.

The VIPerGaN50 enables designers to meet increasingly stringent environmental design codes in line with global energy saving and carbon neutrality goals using GaN wide-bandgap technology.

This device is suitable for consumer and industrial applications including △power adapters △USB-PD chargers △home appliances △air conditioners △LED lighting equipment △smart meter power supplies.

The converter operates in multiple modes to maximize efficiency under all line and load conditions.

At high loads, quasi-resonant (QR) operation via ZVS (Zero-Voltage Switching) minimizes turn-on losses and EMI (Electromagnetic) emissions.

At low loads, valley skipping limits switching losses, and ST's unique valley lock function prevents audible noise.

ZVS-based frequency foldback ensures optimal efficiency at light loads with adaptive burst mode operation that minimizes losses at very low loads, and advanced power management features reduce standby power to below 30mW.

Additionally, output overvoltage protection, brown-in and brown-out protection, and input overvoltage protection features ensure safety and reliability.

Input voltage feedforward compensation minimizes output peak power variations and provides frequency jitter and embedded thermal shutdown functionality to minimize EMI.

The highly integrated VIPerGaN50 with single-switch topology and embedded current sensing and protection circuits is provided in an ultra-compact and cost-effective 5mm x 6mm package.
