TI Launches Industry's First MIPI® RFFE Embedded Power Circuit to Maximize Battery Life in 2G, 3G, 4G, and LTE Smartphones and Tablets
TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) August 29, 2013 – TI (CEO Kent Chon) announced the launch of RF power converters featuring the industry's first RFFE (radio frequency front-end) digital control interface, a standard that simplifies multi-band and multi-wireless communications. The highly efficient LM3263 buck converter and LM3279 buck-boost converter significantly reduce heat generation and power consumption in RF power amplifiers used in 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE smartphones, tablets, and data cards, thereby improving battery life and extending talk time. The LM3263 2.5A buck converter meets the stringent RF requirements of multimode multiband power amplifiers by providing average power tracking capabilities for rapid output voltage transients. Additionally, dynamic current support and bypass functions minimize inductor size without output regulation losses, achieving a 10mm² solution that is only half the size of competing solutions. The LM3279 1A buck-boost regulator supports high-speed output voltage transients in 3G and 4G LTE. In addition, even if the battery voltage is low, the amplifier is enabled to support high output power and high data rates.

• MIPI RFFE Digital Control Interface: Compatible with next-generation RF front-end chipsets, power amplifiers, and reference platforms. The 2.5A LM3263 meets the voltage and current requirements for 2G, 3G, and 4G, while the LM3279 supports 1A loads for 3G and 4G.

In addition, TI has released the LM8335 general-purpose output expander to complement the LM3263 and LM3279, which features a built-in MIPI RFFE host interface. Furthermore, this expander reduces general-purpose I/O pin allocation and maximizes design flexibility by supporting up to eight additional analog outputs from analog-controlled non-MIPI RFFE compatible components.
