Support for international standardization activities of 298 ICT experts starting in April
39 forums will be held on topics including 6G, open wireless access networks, and UAM.

The Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Lim Hye-sook, hereinafter referred to as the “MSIT”) will support the activities of international standardization experts and the operation of private standardization forums to enhance the competitiveness of technology standards in the information and communications field.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that starting in April, it will begin supporting the activities of international standardization experts and the operation of private standardization forums in the information and communications technology sector, which is at the core of digital transformation and the competition for technological supremacy.

The Ministry of Science and ICT has been supporting the activities of domestic experts in international standardization organizations since 2000, and based on these efforts, Korea has achieved the success of securing the second-highest number of study group chairs in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standardization sector this year.

This year, a total of 298 experts were selected as beneficiaries of support, including 105 experts in essential national strategic technologies such as artificial intelligence, mobile communications, cybersecurity, and quantum cryptography, which are becoming increasingly important in the global competition for technological supremacy, and it was announced that support for their activities will begin in April.

Additionally, the Ministry of Science and ICT supports 39 standardization discussions.

The Ministry of Science and ICT has been supporting the Standardization Forum, a private standardization consultative body in which domestic companies participate, since 2000, and has proposed 182 domestic technology standards to the international de facto standardization organization in 2021 and developed 222 discussion standards. and achieved results by applying 71 cases to products and services.

This year, while continuing to support 33 standardization forums, including the 'Intelligent Information Technology Forum' and the 'Future Quantum Convergence Forum,' we also plan to support six new forums that are highly related to essential national strategic technology fields or fields expected to see digital technology-based industrial innovation, including the 6th Generation (6G) Mobile Communication Forum, Open LAN Forum, Urban Air Mobility (UAM) Forum, and Medical Artificial Intelligence Forum.

Song Sang-hoon, Director General of the Ministry of Science and ICT's Information and Communication Industry Policy Bureau, emphasized, "In order to realize digital transformation and secure leadership in the international technological hegemony competition, strengthening international standardization capabilities in the field of digital innovation technology is of utmost importance." He added, "We will actively support our country's information and communication standards experts to play a leading role in the international standardization field and to further invigorate companies' standardization activities."
