Altera Launches DC-DC Power Converter Solution Delivering Up to 35% Higher System Power Efficiency and Reducing Board Space by Up to 50%
Hong Kong, October 23, 2013 - Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) today announced four new reference designs leveraging power technology acquired through the Enpirion® acquisition. These reference designs provide FPGA users and board developers with turnkey power solutions that deliver up to 35 percent higher power efficiency compared to competitive power solutions, reduce board space by up to 50 percent, and reduce total BOM bulk capacitance costs by up to 50 percent. Altera's power-optimized reference designs are provided to customers as downloadable design packages and are demonstrated on hardware with Altera development kits. The design package targeting Cyclone® V SoC is available for download now, and additional design packages targeting 28nm FPGAs will be available later in the current quarter.
Altera's power-optimized reference designs use Enpirion PowerSoC DC-DC converters, which integrate a controller, high-frequency power FETs, and inductors in a compact, thermally efficient package. The ultra-compact, high-performance components are optimized to provide the high dynamic performance required for FPGA power delivery while implementing minimal board space. The Enpirion PowerSoC enables FPGA board developers to increase system power efficiency by up to 35 percent while reducing power converter space by up to 50 percent. By providing both industry-leading FPGA solutions and innovative power solutions, Altera is enabling customers to implement FPGA-based systems that efficiently manage system power and performance with proven reliability.
Altera's power-optimized reference designs provide design teams with significant productivity gains. Altera has optimized board layout and provides customers with detailed schematics, enabling board developers to easily integrate and evaluate power optimization technology in their FPGA-based systems. The reference designs have been tested by Altera to operate optimally with the company's FPGAs and SoCs and are provided as downloadable design packages. Each design package includes FPGA power schematics, application notes, BOM lists, power tree layout guidelines, and Gerber files for individual power components. This information simplifies board layout, shortens design cycles, and ensures board developers achieve first-pass success.
The downloadable first power reference design targets the low-power, low-cost Cyclone V SoC, which integrates an ARM® Cortex™ A9 processor system into a 28nm FPGA. Power reference designs targeting Stratix® V, Arria® V, and Cyclone V FPGAs will be available later in the current quarter. Altera plans to demonstrate power optimization technology on hardware with four 28nm development kits comprising the Stratix V GX FPGA Development Kit, Arria V GT FPGA Development Kit, Cyclone V GX FPGA Development Kit, and Cyclone V SX SoC Development Kit. These boards integrate Altera power solutions and will demonstrate the performance, functionality, power efficiency, and board space savings of Altera power optimization technology.
