Latest 8K-UHD and 5G convergence media broadcasting based on ATSC 3.0

Domestic researchers are leading the global 8K-UHD market in the next-generation ultra-high-definition TV broadcasting and telecommunications sector by unveiling 8K-UHD media service technology tailored to North American broadcasting standards to the world.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced that it will showcase its latest 8K-UHD broadcasting and 5G convergence media broadcasting technologies at NAB 2022, the world's largest international broadcast equipment exhibition, which will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center in the United States for four days starting on the 24th.

8K-UHD is a screen composed of approximately 33 million pixels and is represented as ultra-high definition, having a resolution that is four times sharper than 4K.

In addition, as the need for broadcasting and media technology development to provide seamless 8K-UHD services grows, we are unveiling ATSC 3.0-based technologies together with domestic broadcasting equipment manufacturers.

The technologies being unveiled this time include MIMO-based 8K service technology, OTT/OTA interoperability 8K service technology, and a 5G-MBMS broadcasting system.

The research team [referenced] the North American terrestrial broadcasting standard ATSC 3.0 table8K-UHD real-time streaming service is introduced through JUNE-compliant MIMO transmitters and receivers.

The technologies showcased at this exhibition are purely domestic proprietary technologies developed through long-term joint research with domestic broadcasting equipment manufacturers such as KBS, CleverLogic, Kaimedia, Argos, and Rowasis.

ATSC Chairwoman Madeleine Noland said, “I am confident that the ATSC 3.0-based 8K-UHD service technology and 5G convergence media service technology exhibited by ETRI present the path forward for future broadcasting.”

Bang Seung-chan, Head of the Communications and Media Research Institute at ETRI, also said, "We will use this NAB 2022 as an opportunity to widely promote the excellence of Korea's 8K-UHD broadcasting technology and 5G convergence media service technology, and to lead the global expansion of domestic companies."

Meanwhile, the research team announced plans to fully establish the technical foundation for watching ultra-high-definition 8K broadcasts through the advancement of source technology.
