Keysight Technologies has been granted the industry's first Spectrum Horizon license to develop 6G technology in the sub-terahertz (sub-THz) frequency band, enabling the company to develop advanced technologies.

Keysight Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: KEYS), a leading technology company that helps enterprises, service providers and governments accelerate innovation to connect and secure the world, announced it has received the industry's first Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Spectrum Horizons Experimental license to develop 6G technology in the sub-terahertz (sub-THz) frequency bands ranging from 95 gigahertz (GHz) to 3 terahertz (THz).

Keysight said that obtaining the FCC license will enable it to take a step forward in developing advanced technologies that support data-intensive, high-bandwidth applications, imaging and sensing for industry and academic researchers.

Meanwhile, Keysight is the first company to obtain FCC licenses for frequencies above 246 GHz and 275.5 GHz.

“Innovations in the sub-terahertz spectrum are driving immersive telepresence, digital twins, and extended reality—the blend of real and virtual reality created by computer technology and wearables,” said Roger Nichols, Keysight’s 5G & 6G program director. “It will support experiences such as the environment and human-machine interaction,” he said. “The FCC Spectrum Horizon license will enable Keysight to further develop 6G technologies and lead innovators to pioneer new frontiers for future generations of communications systems.”
Keysight said it applied for an FCC license to accelerate the development of 6G technology while ensuring it blocks harmful interference to existing licensed users.

The acquisition of several FCC licenses follows Keysight's active participation in advancing US spectrum policy through consortia such as the mmWave Coalition, of which it is a founding member. The mmWave Coalition is a coalition of innovative companies working to remove regulatory barriers to technology and utilize frequencies ranging from 95 GHz to 450 GHz.
