Dish Network builds nationwide 5G network… Second largest in history
Expectations of expanding U.S. market share and strengthening position as a key supplier
Samsung Electronics continues its push into the global 5G market by supplying large-scale 5G telecommunications equipment to DISH Network, the fourth mobile carrier in the United States.
Samsung Electronics announced that it has been selected as a large-scale 5G telecommunications equipment supplier for Dish Network.
Samsung Electronics said it plans to supply various communication equipment, including radio products such as virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN) and Massive MIMO radio, for the construction of Dish Network's nationwide 5G network in the United States.
'5G virtualized base stations' are next-generation technologies that support the construction and operation of flexible and efficient communication networks by implementing base station functions through software installed on general-purpose servers.
Dish Network, a satellite TV service company founded in 1980, entered the mobile telecommunications market in 2020 by securing a frequency license for nationwide wireless telecommunications services in the United States and is continuing to invest in building a nationwide 5G network.
Last March, Samsung Electronics won the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022 Global Mobile Awards with its 5G virtualized base station It was announced that it has proven its commercial capabilities in global markets, including the UK and Japan, following the industry's first successful large-scale commercialization of virtualized base stations in the US in December 2020, including achieving the feat of winning two awards at the Global Mobile Awards: the 'CTO Choice' and the 'Best Mobile Innovation Technology Award'.
"5G virtualized base stations, which integrate Samsung Electronics' next-generation software technology and global commercial capabilities, are leading a paradigm shift in the telecommunications market. This collaboration with Dish is the fruit of these efforts," said Jeon Kyung-hoon, President and Head of Samsung Electronics' Network Business Division. "We will continue to carry on our DNA of ceaseless challenge and innovation to realize the infinite possibilities that the advancement of telecommunications technology will bring."
John Swieringa, Chief Operating Officer (President) of Dish Network, said, "Samsung Electronics' 5G virtualized base stations and next-generation communication technologies will play a key role in building Dish's 5G network," adding, "Through our collaboration with Samsung Electronics, Dish plans to provide customers with superior mobile communication services and continue 5G technology innovations that will further enrich the future communication experience."

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert

ETRI Develops 200Gbps Photodetector… Initiates Localization of Optical Receivers for AI Data Centers
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has developed a photodetector device that processes optical signals of approximately 200Gbps per channel for the first time in Korea. This device is a component that converts optical signals into electrical signals and determines the reception performance of AI data centers and 5G/6G communication networks. ETRI achieved bandwidth of 70GHz or higher and optical responsivity of 0.75A/W or higher, and integrated an indium phosphide lens on the rear of the chip to enhance optical reception efficiency and alignment convenience. The technology was presented at OECC 2025 and was recently published in the international academic journal 'Optics Express'.
