Bluetooth SIG and Wireless Power Alliance (A4WP) Sign Memorandum of Understanding for Official Liaison Relationship
Published2013.11.04 15:23October 29, 2013 - Bluetooth SIG and the Wireless Power Alliance (A4WP: Alliance for Wireless Power) announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding establishing an official liaison relationship to usher in a new era of smart wireless charging devices.
As a first step, Bluetooth SIG has assigned a unique identifier (UUID) to adopt A4WP within the Basic System Specification (BSS). The A4WP BSS utilizes the Bluetooth Smart wireless standard for session management and power control between A4WP chargers and A4WP-certified devices (e.g., smartphones).
The benefits of closely integrating Bluetooth Smart and A4WP standards include the following:
•Consumers benefit from faster charging when devices make contact with the charging surface.
•Additionally, when charging multiple devices simultaneously, users enjoy enhanced power management capabilities, such as prioritizing the charging of one device first.
•OEMs and developers can create new application areas using these smart wireless chargers. (e.g., mobile payment, location-based services)
Dr. Kamil A. Grajski, Chairman of A4WP, stated, "Bluetooth Smart is the underlying technology of the Wireless Power Alliance," and added, "By combining magnetic resonance wireless power transfer technology with Bluetooth Smart technology, A4WP enables simultaneous charging of many devices with a single charger regardless of location, from tables to desks to automobiles, while providing a seamless next-generation user experience that extends from wireless headsets to smartphones, tablets, and notebooks."
"The integration of Bluetooth Smart technology into A4WP wireless charging technology enables entirely new thinking about what wireless charging is and what it can do," said Suke Jawanda, Chief Marketing Officer of Bluetooth SIG. He further stated, "This opens unprecedented possibilities in wireless charging applications, services, and communication solutions that operate when the charger surface and device make contact. For example, simply placing a phone on a table could complete a food order and payment. The opportunities are endless, and through this partnership, these opportunities will become reality," he expressed with anticipation.
