July 4, 2011 – Wolfson Microelectronics Korea (CEO Ki-Tae Kim, www.wolfsonmicro.com ) announced today the release of an ultra-low power, high-performance stereo DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter). This product provides excellent audio performance for portable applications such as mobile phones, tablet PCs, wireless headsets, multimedia players, and small gaming devices.
The WM8918 features a stereo ground-referenced headphone amplifier using Wolfson's Class-W amplifier and optimizes power consumption and efficiency during playback through an innovative dual-mode charge pump architecture, as well as reducing PCB area and BOM (Bill of Materials) costs by eliminating AC coupling capacitors and improving bass response.
The WM8918 features Wolfson’s SilentSwitch™ technology, which minimizes audible pop-and-click and simplifies software driver development. The integrated dynamic range controller implements compression and level control functions to provide an enhanced playback experience. This feature also ensures high-quality recording performance when processing signals captured through Wolfson’s on-chip digital microphone interface. The WM8918 also features Wolfson’s ReTune™ mobile 5-band parametric equalizer and perfect programmable coefficients to optimize speaker performance and further enhance the playback experience.
The WM8918 features a DAC that provides 3.8mW of standby power performance and a 96dB (typical) signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) during headphone playback, and can operate by directly supplying 1.8V power. Additionally, for optimal power consumption, the digital core can operate down to 1.0V.

Commercial viability
The WM8918 is currently being sampled in a 4mm x 4mm 32-pin QFN package.

ST Launches 75V Drive IC Targeting 48V Industrial Motor Driving
