Award Ceremony for the 12th Intelligent SoC Robot War 2013 Sponsored by Altera

November 1, 2013, Seoul – Altera Korea (www.altera.com) announced that the awards ceremony for the winners of the finals of the "12th Intelligent SoC Robot War 2013" officially sponsored by Altera was held on October 27th. At the final competition and awards ceremony held at KINTEX in Ilsan on October 27th, the Giants team won the Huro-competition category and the Ansoul team won the Taekwondo Robot category, each receiving the honor of the Presidential Award and the Prime Minister's Award respectively.
The "Intelligent SoC Robot War 2013" (www.socrobotwar.org), hosted by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and organized by KAIST System Design and Application Research Center (SDIA) and officially sponsored by Altera Korea and Altera's headquarters University Program, is an SoC robot competition for university and graduate students nationwide, marking its 12th edition this year.
In this competition, approximately 40 universities and 107 teams participated in heated competition, with 10 teams advancing to the finals in the Huro-competition category and 12 teams in the Taekwondo Robot category.
The winners were determined at the finals held over four days from October 24th to 27th. The Huro-competition category is an intelligent robot competition combining various recognition algorithms utilizing image recognition, wireless communication, and voice recognition of robots with driving algorithms, while the Taekwondo Robot category is a format where teams identify the position, distance, and movement of the opponent robot through image recognition technology and autonomously determine attack and defense without external remote control to decide victory or defeat.
Altera sponsored 64 DE0-nano boards to 8 award-winning teams in the Huro-competition and SoC Taekwondo Robot categories, which are all returned to the respective university research laboratories. Additionally, Altera provided the Cyclone® FPGA and configuration components mounted on development boards that were distributed to teams that passed the first test conducted by category after application. The Cyclone® FPGA processes in real-time the format conversion, noise filtering, and extraction of specific colors from images obtained through the robot's camera, and serves as a key chip for image recognition by calculating the distance and coordinates of the target that the robot tracks, making it an essential component for participating teams' development.
Meanwhile, the Intelligent SoC Robot War was first held at the Asia-Pacific SoC Technology Exhibition (AP-SoC 2002) in November 2002, aiming at cultivating advanced technical personnel in the SoC field through the implementation of intelligent robots utilizing SoC and promoting the IT-SoC and intelligent robot fields as next-generation growth drivers. Since 2005, in addition to the existing SoC tank robot, a two-legged robot competition called SoC Taekwondo Robot was newly established, and since 2010 it has been conducted in two categories: Huro-competition and SoC Taekwondo Robot.
Altera began officially sponsoring this competition as part of its University Program starting in 2008.
