November 14, 2013 – Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-kwak) announced the launch of the LT8302, a monolithic flyback regulator that greatly simplifies the design of isolated DC/DC converters. By directly sampling the isolated output voltage from the primary-side flyback waveform, this component eliminates the need for an optoisolator or tertiary winding for regulation. The LT8302 operates from 2.8V to 42V input voltage, features a 3.6A/65V power switch, and delivers up to 15W of output power, making it suitable for a wide range of applications including industrial, medical, datacom, military, and automotive.

The LT8302 operates in Boundary mode, providing +/-5% typ regulation across the entire line, load, and temperature range using variable frequency current mode control switching. Boundary mode allows for the use of a smaller transformer compared to equivalent continuous conduction mode designs. The output voltage is easily set using two external resistors and the transformer turns ratio. Various standard transformers available in the datasheet can be readily applied to numerous applications. The high integration and low-ripple Burst Mode® operation characteristics enable simple implementation of high-efficiency applications with minimal component count for isolated power delivery.
Additional features include output short-circuit protection, 380µA no-load standby current when the output voltage is regulated, internal soft start and calibration, as well as output diode temperature compensation.

The LT8302 is available in a compact SO-8 package with enhanced thermal performance. Extended and industrial versions operate over a junction temperature range of –40°C to 125°C. The high-temperature automotive grade operates from –40°C to 150°C, and the military-grade version operates from –55°C to 150°C. Pricing is $3.47 per unit at 1,000-unit quantities.
