With the completion of the Eum 5G frequency allocation and change registration for telecommunications business applied for by CJ OliveNetworks to the Ministry of Science and ICT, Eum 5G has expanded its application fields into the media sector.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that the allocation of Eum 5G frequencies and the change of registration for telecommunications business applied for by CJ OliveNetworks Co., Ltd. were completed on August 30.

Eum 5G is a 5G communication network that allows operators who wish to provide 5G convergence services on a specific area (land/building) basis to build and provide services using 5G frequencies.

CJ OliveNetworks' frequency allocation and change of registration for telecommunications business is the fifth case to enter the Eeum 5G telecommunications business, following Naver Cloud (December 2021), LG CNS (March and June 2022), SK Networks Service (May 2022), and Nable Communications (August 2022).

The details of CJ OliveNetworks' Eum 5G application are as follows: the requested frequencies are 4.7 GHz (100 MHz bandwidth) and 28 GHz (600 MHz bandwidth), and the site is for the CJ Data Center (Incheon, gross floor area 0.009342 km²) for 5 years (October 1, 2022 – September 2027). It has been for 30 years.

CJ OliveNetworks announced that Eum 5G is scheduled to be operated to demonstrate media services such as real-time video editing and real-time immersive content based on augmented and virtual reality, as well as intelligent logistics services such as AI-based logistics robots and facial recognition security monitoring.

He also stated that through these demonstrations, they would secure differentiated competitiveness in the media sector via Eum 5G. In particular, he mentioned that film and drama sets and editing rooms would be connected via 5G, enabling real-time video editing, and that with the support of Eum 5G technology, it would be possible to plan high-definition live broadcasts of concerts, the production of immersive content based on augmented and virtual reality, and hologram performances.

The Ministry of Science and ICT allocated the entire requested frequency band to CJ OliveNetworks after conducting radio interference analysis, taking into account the company's plans to utilize large-scale traffic in media and logistics sectors. In addition, it was announced that it processed the change of registration for CJ OliveNetworks to a key telecommunications business operator holding line facilities, after reviewing the appropriateness of the user protection plan submitted for the provision of Eeum 5G services—which shifted from businesses such as holding and reselling switching facilities for existing internet telephony and international dedicated lines—and imposing the minimum necessary user protection measures.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Radio Promotion Agency stated that this allocation was able to acquire 5G expertise based on the support system of the 'Eum 5G Support Center'.

Park Yun-gyu, the Second Vice Minister of Science and ICT, stated, “The allocation of Eum 5G frequencies is significant in that it pioneers a new application field for Eum 5G in the media sector, following existing fields such as robotics, smart factories, and medical services.” He added, “As Eum 5G enables companies to strengthen their digital competitiveness and create new markets, the government will spare no support to help various companies find new growth opportunities through Eum 5G.”
