Shipped the world's first 28nm FPGA device, showcasing an application development platform for next-generation systems
First shipment of KINTEX-7 K325T FPGAs for next-generation systems to customers
Xilinx Korea (Country Manager Heung-Sik Ahn) – Xilinx has launched the first batch of 7 Series FPGAs with the shipment of the first KINTEX™-7 325T FPGA and announced the first release of the industry's fastest next-generation programmable gate device built with 28nm technology. The KINTEX-7 FPGA is designed to provide optimal price performance with the lowest power consumption to meet the requirements of critical applications. At the same time, the KINTEX-7 FPGA family utilizes a unified architecture shared across the 7 Series, 28nm device family, enabling customers to start FPGA development immediately for designs that can ultimately be migrated to Artix™-7 and Virtex®-7 FPGAs.
The KINTEX-7 device is supplied with Xilinx® ISE® Design Suite 13, AMBA® 4 AXI bus protocol compatible IP, and target reference designs, all of which run on the new KINTEX-7 FPGA KC705 evaluation board, which is currently being introduced to customers to allow designers to evaluate power consumption, performance, and capabilities on the new KINTEX-7 K325T device. By utilizing TSMC's 28nm High Performance, Low Power (HPL) process, which relies on proven design and manufacturing methods, Xilinx delivered the new device within 90 days of tape-out. Eric Wogsberg, CEO of Jupiter System, stated, “The low power and optimized performance available in the KINTEX-7 family are ideal for next-generation products. Thanks to the unified architecture of this new 7 series, Jupiter System is able to develop products using KINTEX-7 today. It also enables future upgrades to more advanced products that will use the Virtex-FPGA family. This results in lower development costs and allows us to build scalable solutions.”
"As the world's fastest-growing oscilloscope company, Agilent Technologies' High Performance Oscilloscope Planner, Joel Woodward, stated, 'As Agilent is the fastest-growing oscilloscope company, we are constantly seeking technologies that deliver faster performance and lower power through high-speed transceivers. We not only develop equipment requiring superior high-speed serial I/O but also sample scopes for high-speed serial debugging and feature, providing scopes with excellent real-time 32 GHz analog bandwidth. We are very pleased to be one of the first customers to receive the KINTEX-7 K325T FPGA, which combines superior performance, low power, and serial capabilities.'" “Thanks to the price-performance available in the KINTEX-7 product family, this product will be the next generation of test equipment,” he said. “We have been using Xilinx devices for numerous oscilloscopes that need to lower development costs and build scalable test and measurement solutions.”
Accelerating 7-Series FPGA development with the industry's first 28nm target design platform
Along with shipping the first KINTEX-7 FPGAs to customers, Xilinx also introduced the industry's first 28nm target design platform, combining the KINTEX-7 K325T FPGA, ISE development tools, AXI 4-compatible IP, and an early version of the basic target reference design running on the KINTEX-7 FPGA KC705 evaluation board. This new 7-series target design platform enables customers to immediately begin evaluating the low-power, high-performance, and improved characteristics available in the Artix-7 and Virtex-7 FPGA families as well as the KINTEX-7 FPGA. Designers and engineers now have easy-to-use and flexible FPGAs as an alternative to inflexible and slow-developing ASICs or silicon-based ASSPs.
Bruce Kleinman, Vice President of Platform Marketing at Xilinx, stated, “With the development of the first 28nm FPGA, Xilinx improved the Xilinx ISE design tool to enable faster execution times and designs using up to 2 million logic cells. Additionally, we were able to reduce the time required to migrate AXI protocol-compatible IP initially developed with Virtex-6 and Spartan®-6 FPGAs to the 7 Series from weeks to hours.” He added, “As a result of these efforts, Xilinx was able to bring this first 7 Series target design platform to life within hours through highly effective designs that demonstrate the key advantages of the 7 Series devices.”
