Linear, 42V, 3.5A (IOUT), 2.2MHz Synchronous Step-Down DC/DC Converter Launch

December 18, 2013 – Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-gwak) announced the launch of two synchronous step-down DC/DC converters (product names: LT8610A and LT8610AB).
Both products are synchronous step-down switching regulators capable of 3.5A output and 42V input. Synchronous rectification achieves efficiency as high as 96%, while Burst Mode® operation maintains quiescent current below 2.5µA under no-load standby conditions. The input voltage range of 3.4V to 42V is ideal for automotive and industrial applications. The 5A integrated switch can deliver output voltage as low as 0.97V with continuous output current up to 3.5A.
The LT8610A/AB's Burst Mode operation provides minimum quiescent current and is well-suited for applications such as automotive "always-on" systems. This feature is necessary to extend the battery operating life of the system. The unique design of the LT8610A/AB maintains a minimum dropout voltage of only 200mV at 1A under all conditions, enabling excellent performance in scenarios such as automotive cold crank. Additionally, the fast minimum on-time of only 30ns implements 2MHz fixed frequency switching from 16V input to 1.0V output, allowing designers to avoid noise-sensitive frequency bands while optimizing efficiency. The 16-pin thermally enhanced MSOP package and high switching frequency of the LT8610A/AB provide a compact and thermally efficient footprint with smaller external inductors and capacitors. Compared to the LT8610A product, the LT8610AB offers higher efficiency at light loads below 0.5mA. However, it results in slightly higher output ripple.
The LT8610A and LT8610AB share all performance and features of the standard product LT8610 with the following performance enhancements. First, the two new products provide 3.5A continuous output current instead of the 2.5A performance of the LT8610. Second, the minimum on-time is reduced from 50ns to 30ns, realizing 16V input to 1V output step-down conversion at 2MHz compared to 1.8V for the standard LT8610. All other electrical characteristics are identical to the standard LT8610.
The LT8610AEMSE and LT8610ABEMSE are supplied in a thermally enhanced MSOP-16 package at $3.75 per unit. The industrial temperature version LT8610AIMSE and LT8610ABIMSE are tested and guaranteed to operate over the junction temperature range of -40°C to 125°C, starting at $4.13 per unit. The automotive temperature version LT8610AHMSE and LT8610ABHMSE are tested and guaranteed to operate at junction temperatures of 40°C to 150°C, supplied at $4.38 per unit.
