In-house development of four types of semiconductor chips begins

GM Cruise announced that it has released four types of semiconductor chips for autonomous driving, leaving Nvidia behind.

On the 13th, Reuters reported that GM Cruise independently developed four types of autonomous driving semiconductor chips due to the continued instability in the supply and demand of automotive semiconductors, citing cost and production volume as the reasons.

GM Cruise originally used Nvidia GPUs, but it appears they have turned their backs on them due to low order volumes and a lack of price negotiations.

“Two years ago, Nvidia wouldn’t even negotiate on price because the order volume was so low,” Jenkins said. “We figured it would be better to develop it ourselves rather than keep buying it at such a high price.”

GM Cruise is expected to increase the versatility of its chips and expand car production to offset the initial costs of chip development. The investment cost was not disclosed.

GM Cruise executives are now taking concrete steps, including announcing details about a custom chip that will power the Origin vehicle without pedals or a steering wheel.

The company announced that it has developed four self-developed chips so far, including △'HORTA', which acts as the brain of the car, △Dune, which processes data from sensors, and △a chip for radar.

GM Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt said the company plans to develop a custom chip that will power its self-driving car, Origin, in 2025.
