STMicroelectronics (ST), a global semiconductor company supporting a wide range of electronic applications and customers, has released a small, flexible synchronous buck controller that handles a wide range of step-down regulation ratios.

ST announced on the 25th that it has released the L3751 synchronous buck controller, which features a compact size and supports an input voltage range of 6V to 75V.

This controller can be used in a wide range of fields, from industrial equipment to battery-powered lightweight electric vehicle applications. With a size of only 3.5 mm x 4.5 mm, it is also suitable for communication and networking equipment that typically uses 24V and 48V buses.

The L3751 supports very low duty cycles with a minimum on-time duration of 40ns, enabling it to handle a wide range of step-down ratios. This allows it to power low-voltage devices directly without intermediate conversion, simplifying circuit design and reducing the Bill of Materials (BoM). Additionally, this device integrates a 7.5V power supply for the gate driver.

In addition to a wide supply voltage range, the L3751 can operate in harsh electrical environments with a 100V allowable input. Since the switching frequency can be adjusted from 100 kHz to 1 MHz, designers can flexibly optimize circuit size, performance, and cost depending on external MOSFETs and passive components.

The L3751 can operate in diode-emulation mode to increase efficiency and minimize ripple, and supports pulse skipping under light load.

The L3751 provides extensive protection features, including thermal protection, input UVLO (Under-Voltage Lockout), constant current protection via Hiccup Mode, and programmable current sensing. It also features an external Enable pin and an Open-Collector Power-Good indicator.

The 100W evaluation board STEVAL-L3751V12 is also supported to help designers accelerate the selection of devices needed for power supply development.

The L3751 is currently in production and is available in a QFN20 package featuring wettable flanks useful for inspection. The price is $1.36 for a purchase of 1,000 units.
