STMicroelectronics Launches Ultra-Small Gyroscope Optimized for Smartphone and Digital Camera Image Stabilization
January 13, 2014, Seoul — STMicroelectronics (ST), a global semiconductor company serving customers across various electronic applications, the world's No. 1 MEMS manufacturer, and a leading supplier of MEMS sensors for portable consumer products, announced the launch of the L2G2IS, an ultra-compact 2-axis gyroscope optimized for Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) in smartphones and digital cameras.
With its ultra-compact size of 2.3x2.3x0.7mm, the L2G2IS can be easily integrated into next-generation image stabilization camera modules where component size is critical. It is 50% smaller in area and 60% smaller in volume than the previous generation product, while still providing the high performance required by applications and consumers.
Fabio Pasolini, Head of ST Motion MEMS Business Unit, said, “With the launch of dedicated MEMS gyroscopes, optical image stabilization has established itself as a core feature of smartphones and digital cameras. With the launch of L2G2IS, the area and volume required for this core function have been significantly reduced, and through this, ST has raised the bar and set a new milestone.”
Key technical features of this new product include full-scale range operation from ±100dps to ±200dps, 3- and 4-wire SPI interfaces, and the integration of bandwidth-selectable low-pass and high-pass filters. In addition, L2G2IS operates in a supply voltage range of 1.7V to 3.6V.
