ST54K, Guarantees Ultimate Security for Contactless Transactions

STMicroelectronics (hereinafter ST) announced on the 14th that its ST54K IC manages contactless NFC communication control and security functions in the newly released Google Pixel 7 smartphone.

This ST device, chosen by Google designers, integrates NFC control and an authenticated Secure Element onto a single chip to save space and simplify handset design.

The ST54K, equipped with proprietary technology that enhances NFC contactless sensitivity, has been adopted to ensure an exceptional contactless user experience and the highest level of security for contactless transactions, along with the most stable connectivity.

ST combined Thales' mobile security operating system (OS) with the ST54K for the Google Pixel 7.

This OS meets the highest level of security industry standards and supports the integration of other NFC security applications and eSIMs (embedded SIMs) into the same ST54K security device.

Marie-France Li-Saï Florentin, Vice President of ST Microcontrollers and Digital ICs Group and General Manager of Security Microcontrollers, stated, “Google offers outstanding performance, low power, and robust security that meets the highest security level, CC EAL5+.“We adopted ST54K to provide [this],” they stated, adding, “Through this, we are able to guarantee not only the best user experience but also safe contactless transactions.”

Emmanuel Unguran, Senior Vice President of Mobile Connectivity Solutions at Thales, emphasized, “By combining ST’s ST54K with Thales’ secure OS and issuance capabilities, we have been able to provide an authentication solution evolved for smartphones that support a variety of digital services. These include eSIMs that support instant connectivity, as well as digital wallet services such as public transportation ticketing and digital car keys. This solution is also the first product in the Android ecosystem to support eSIM MEP (Multiple Enabled Profiles).”

Meanwhile, the Google Pixel 7 was released to the market on October 7.

ST’s ST54K single-chip, which combines an NFC controller and security elements with Thales’ secure OS, has proven to be a solution supporting stable, high-performance contactless functionality for Android handsets and can be used by all OEMs without restrictions.
