January 24, 2014 - Broadcom, a global leader in wired and wireless semiconductors, today announced two SoCs (system-on-a-chip) for entry-level satellite set-top boxes. Broadcom's newly announced BCM7364 and BCM7399 direct broadcast satellite chips are designed to the advanced HEVC (high-efficiency video codec) standard, enabling satellite service providers to deliver numerous HD content channels to subscribers over existing network infrastructure. Broadcom is also showcasing the BCM7364 and BCM7399 at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2014.

Rich Nelson, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Broadcom's Broadband Communications Group, stated, "With the introduction of entry-level satellite chipsets, Broadcom is able to extend HEVC across its entire set-top box (STB) product lineup." He added, "By offering diverse deployment options, Broadcom aims to rapidly bring video compression technology to market and efficiently meet customer needs by delivering high-quality user experiences from entry-level devices through premium-performance set-top box gateways."

As home subscribers worldwide continue to consume increasing amounts of HD content, service providers must deliver the bandwidth required for set-top box transmission. The new SoC, with integrated HEVC compression standard support, delivers high-quality 1080p60 HD content at approximately 50% of the bandwidth required today.
