Ministry of Science and ICT expands private sector funding from 8 billion to 12 billion won... Forms alliance
As the government continues to actively support the expansion of 5G specialized network projects, a venue was set up to share the achievements of public-private cooperation in 5G specialized network convergence services.
The Ministry of Science and ICT, the Korea Intelligent Information Society Agency, and the Korea Information and Communication Industry Promotion Agency announced that they held the '5th Generation Specialized Network Convergence Service Performance Sharing Meeting' at COEX on Tuesday, the 20th.
At this event, Professor Jang Kyung-hee of Inha University (Executive Chair of the 5G Forum) gave a presentation on the topic of 'The Present and Future through 5th Generation Specialized Networks' to share demonstration cases and achievements of 5G specialized network convergence services.
Professor Jang explored the potential of 5G specialized networks as a catalyst for next-generation digital innovation.
In addition, the Korea Intelligent Information Society Agency announced that it has established a communication system among participating demonstration organizations to expand the 5G specialized network to the private sector. The 'direction of support for 5th generation specialized networks, including specialized network consortiums' was announced, followed by an awards ceremony for those who contributed to the discovery of 5G specialized network convergence services and the expansion of their utilization.
In parallel with the event, an exhibition and academic conference were held to showcase solutions applied to the 5G specialized network convergence service demonstration project. The exhibition introduced convergence services from all 11 projects (7 in the public sector and 4 in the private sector) of the 5G specialized network demonstration project, which began for the first time this year.
Experiential exhibitions were also held, including augmented reality-based lesion location guidance (medical) and immersive virtual reality performances (culture). At the academic conference, presentations by companies participating in the demonstration project followed.
Meanwhile, government support for the construction of public-private 5G specialized networks is expected to expand further next year.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it would expand the budget for private sector demonstrations from 8 billion won this year to 12 billion won.
To continuously create new digital leading cases, the plan is to expand 5G specialized network test sites to five locations (Pangyo, Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju, and Gumi) to support the market launch of services and terminals developed by companies.
In addition, a 5G specialized network alliance will be launched, centered around 42 companies and institutions that participated in the demonstration project.
They announced that they would actively disseminate know-how from the pilot projects to the private sector by taking the lead in publishing a case study compilation summarizing the results and providing consultations to interested companies.
Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-ho stated, “5G specialized networks enable the construction of faster and safer connectivity by building customized wireless communication networks while maintaining high security, making it a key means to increase corporate productivity and solve public issues.” He added, “The Ministry of Science and ICT will focus on laying the foundation for voluntary expansion at the private level by expanding private sector demonstration investments and supporting consortia next year.”

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.

ETRI Develops 200Gbps Photodetector… Initiates Localization of Optical Receivers for AI Data Centers
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has developed a photodetector device that processes optical signals of approximately 200Gbps per channel for the first time in Korea. This device is a component that converts optical signals into electrical signals and determines the reception performance of AI data centers and 5G/6G communication networks. ETRI achieved bandwidth of 70GHz or higher and optical responsivity of 0.75A/W or higher, and integrated an indium phosphide lens on the rear of the chip to enhance optical reception efficiency and alignment convenience. The technology was presented at OECC 2025 and was recently published in the international academic journal 'Optics Express'.

SKT and Ericsson Expand Joint Research on AI Networks… Preparing for 6G Beyond 5G Advancement
SK Telecom and Ericsson are expanding AI-based mobile network collaboration. On the 19th, the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding covering 5G advancement through 6G standardization, and agreed to undertake joint research and verification in the areas of AI-RAN, open and autonomous networks, security, and future communication technologies. This collaboration is interpreted as a move to enhance current 5G operational efficiency while preparing for a 6G environment where AI becomes embedded throughout the network. The scope also includes network operations automation, multi-vendor environment response, energy efficiency improvements, and review of communication-sensing fusion technology.

SKT Receives International Standard for AI Data Center Interconnection Structure… Establishes Operating System Standards
SK Telecom's proposed AI data center interworking architecture has received final approval as an international standard at the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) conference. The core of this standard is the classification of AI data centers into three layers—service, management, and infrastructure—and the organization of signaling requirements between layers. As AI service proliferation increases the importance of interworking among various systems within data centers such as computation, power, cooling, storage, and security, this standard is significant in that it presents a common architecture for operations and service delivery. SK Telecom stated that it initiated the relevant standardization project in 2024 and achieved this approval following approximately two years of discussion.
