STMicroelectronics Launches STM32 Dynamic Efficiency Product Line with Enhanced Energy Efficiency

February 6, 2014, Seoul – STMicroelectronics (ST), a global semiconductor company serving customers across a wide range of electronic applications, introduced the STM32F401 microcontrollers as the first products in its new STM32 Dynamic Efficiency™ device product line. These new products combine multiple technologies to provide the best balance between dynamic power consumption and execution performance, while enhancing functional integration.
Combining high energy efficiency with processing capabilities of over 100 DMIPS (DMIPS: a unit for measuring terminal performance), the STM32F401 Dynamic Efficiency Microcontroller extends battery life and supports new features in mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches. It is also ideal for managing MEMS sensors in smart connected devices and is used in Internet of Things (IoT) applications and fieldbus-powered industrial equipment.
The STM32 Dynamic Efficiency Device is equipped with ST's proprietary technologies, such as the ART Accelerator™, instruction prefetch queue, and branch cache. These technologies enable the flash to run with zero standby state, thereby increasing performance to 105 DMIPS (285 CoreMark) at 84 MHz and reducing run current to 128 µA/MHz. Additionally, while 90nm process technology improves performance and reduces dynamic power, dynamic voltage scaling optimizes operating voltage to meet performance requirements while minimizing leakage current. The stop mode current is only 9µA at 1.8V.
The STM32F401 device is an addition to the ARM® Cortex™-M4-based STM32 F4 series equipped with an FPU and DSP. It supports up to 512 kilobytes of flash and 96 kilobytes of SRAM and is provided in a 3.06mm x 3.06mm CSP type package. Peripherals include three 1Mbit/s I2C ports, three USART ports, four SPI ports, two full-duplex I2S audio interfaces, a USB 2.0 OTG full-speed interface, an SDIO interface, a 12-bit 2.4MSPS 16-channel ADC, and up to 10 timers.
