A contest has been organized to provide more accurate scientific information through proper conversation with artificial intelligence (AI).

The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS, President Lee Jeong-hwan), a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, announced on the 2nd that it will hold the 'KIMS AI Science Talk Contest,' which links conversational AI platforms with materials science, taking advantage of the popularity of the generative AI (AI) chatGPT.

ChatGPT, a conversational AI released by OpenAI, is attracting a lot of attention, but there are times when the information it provides is insufficient.

This contest aims to provide users with more accurate scientific information by having scientists from the Korea Institute of Materials Science directly supplement the materials science information provided by ChatGPT.

The 'KIMS AI Science Talk Contest' hosted by the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) accepts applications from March 2 to March 31. Those wishing to participate can use ChatGPT to have a chat conversation with the AI on the topic of KIMS or materials technology (metals, ceramics, powders, nano-surface technology, composite materials, materials processing, etc.), and then access the 'KIMS Sangsang Platform website (https://sangsang.kims.re.kr)' operated by KIMS, enter the conversation content exactly as it is into the input field, and submit their entry. There are no special restrictions on eligibility, limiting each person to one entry.

The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) plans to select and award approximately 50 citizens who submitted excellent conversations through an internal review based on the novelty of the topic (question) and the completeness of the conversation content. In addition, KIMS researchers will select portions of the submitted conversation transcripts and directly edit the information in the ChatGPT responses.

Lee Jeong-hwan, President of the Korea Institute of Materials Science, said, “With the recent emergence of the conversational AI platform ChatGPT, global interest in information generated by artificial intelligence is rapidly increasing,” adding, “We expect that better sharing of scientific information with the public will be possible through proper conversation with ChatGPT and feedback in which researchers directly step in to accurately correct the content.”
