Designers of appliances under 40W, such as adapters, set-top boxes, netbooks, and digital photo frames, all share the common challenge of needing energy-efficient solutions that consume less than 100mW of standby power to meet global energy saving requirements.

To address this problem, Fairchild Semiconductor, a leading global supplier of high-performance power and mobile products, developed the FAN6863, an integrated PWM controller that provides low standby power and high efficiency in a small package.

The FAN6863 minimizes standby power consumption by utilizing a proprietary Green-Mode feature that provides off-time modulation to continuously reduce the switching frequency under low load conditions. Under conditions with no load at all, the power enters Burst-Mode, which cuts off the PWM output. This technology provides excellent standby power of less than 100mW under no-load conditions, enabling designers to meet international power consumption requirements.

The FAN6863, a small SSOT-6 package, is ideal for space-constrained designs while providing features typically found in devices of larger packages. This product provides an integrated internal frequency hopping function that helps reduce EMI radiation using minimal line filters, as well as large gate driving power (400mA and 40W) and surge capability up to 7KV for high reliability.
