The Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI, President Shin Hee-dong) has joined hands with major battery-related organizations to take the lead in battery technology.

KETI announced on the 26th that it signed a multilateral memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen cooperation in battery industry technology with the American Battery Industry Association (CEO James Greenberger, hereinafter NAATBatt), the Korea Battery Industry Association (Vice Chairman Tae-seong Park, hereinafter KBIA), and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (President Byung-joo Min, hereinafter KIAT) in Washington, D.C., U.S. on the 25th (local time) in the presence of Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Chang-yang Lee.

Through this business agreement, the participating organizations agreed to strengthen their cooperative relationship in the battery field, including joint R&D, information sharing, and personnel exchange, including next-generation battery technology and battery reuse and recycling technology.

KETI supports the domestic battery industry through the development of core secondary battery material technologies and the production and characteristic evaluation of cells utilizing these technologies. It is also striving to lead the development of next-generation battery technologies, including all-solid-state batteries.

NAATBatt is an association established in 2008 to promote advanced battery manufacturing in North America, and currently has over 250 member companies worldwide, including Honda, Siemens, and Stellantis.

KBIA was the nation's leader in the battery industry in 2011.Established to strengthen competitiveness, the center supports battery policy development, addresses challenges faced by domestic companies, and facilitates domestic and international exchanges and cooperation. In particular, it aims to further strengthen the Korea-US battery alliance through local outreach activities related to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and cooperation in technology and human resources.

KIAT is an organization that promotes R&D and policy development for domestic industrial technological innovation. Through this agreement, it is expected to serve as a bridge for technological cooperation, including discovering new cooperative needs between Korea and the U.S.

Going forward, the four organizations will collaborate across the entire battery industry cycle, including the development of core battery material technologies.

In particular, we anticipate building a strategic partnership by expanding the supply chain in the materials sector, which is highly dependent on overseas markets, and activating investment between companies in both countries.

KETI President Shin Hee-dong said, “Amidst the fierce competition to dominate the global battery market, it is meaningful that we have an opportunity to discuss industrial technology cooperation between Korea and the U.S. We will not spare our active support to secure ultra-gap technologies to create new markets for both countries through close cooperation in the battery industry.”
