ETRI and Korea Expressway Corporation Join Hands on Open Source Software Utilization

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has joined hands with Korea Expressway Corporation to expand a cooperation framework that supports open source research and development activities.
ETRI announced on the 27th that it has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Korea Expressway Corporation to cooperate in open source-related fields and will actively help public institutions minimize open source risks during software (SW) development.
As open source utilization in the SW industry ecosystem has increased recently, security risk management has become important. Companies are trending toward establishing open source governance systems and responding through mutual cooperation with other institutions.
This cooperation was carried out based on ETRI's excellent track record in open source SW development and operation, with the aim of sharing experience and methods related to establishing and operating open source compliance systems with Korea Expressway Corporation.
Starting with Korea Expressway Corporation, ETRI plans to apply the accumulated open source achievements to domestic public institutions and actively engage in spreading a safe open source R&D ecosystem.
In particular, ETRI plans to systematically transfer know-how and experience regarding source code safety that should be carefully considered when using open source, systematic management and operation systems, security attack risk levels, and legal issues such as license infringement.
Additionally, Korea Expressway Corporation plans to apply ETRI's open source SW operation know-how to actual data and proceed with mobility innovation and digital transformation of road operations.
Specific cooperation fields between ETRI and Korea Expressway Corporation include △contributing to the dissemination and expansion of open source compliance systems △mutual cooperation for building open source management systems △cooperation for strengthening open source license verification capabilities △joint cooperation in responding to SW ecosystem changes such as open source communities and others.
The cooperation between the two institutions is expected to serve as the first step in expanding open source governance systems and is anticipated to contribute to the expansion of open source utilization in domestic public institutions and the development of the open source SW industry in the future.
Han Sung-soo, Director of ETRI's ICT Strategy Research Institute, stated, "This cooperation was carried out with the intention of creating a healthy open source market ecosystem and contributing to ICT industry development by sharing ETRI's open source governance experience externally in a situation where open source utilization is rapidly increasing."
Kim Jang-hwan, Head of Planning at Korea Expressway Corporation, also said, "This agreement is intended to utilize open source, an essential resource for digital innovation, more safely. Furthermore, we will continue to expand digital innovation on expressways, including acquiring international standards (ISO/IEC 5230) certification related to open source compliance."
