The autonomous driving standards proposed by Hyundai Motor Company and the Korea Automotive Research Institute have been passed at an international standardization meeting, and are expected to have a significant impact on the development of Level 3 or higher autonomous driving systems and components.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NITS) announced on the 22nd that it attended the '61st International Standardization Conference on Intelligent Transport Systems (ISO/TC 204)' with 36 domestic experts from industry, academia, research, and government to lead the international standardization of autonomous driving.

This meeting actively discussed 26 autonomous driving international standards projects led by Korea.

In particular, the 'Risk Minimization Measures for Autonomous Driving' standard proposed by Hyundai Motor Company and the Korea Automotive Research Institute in December 2020 passed the vote of member countries at this meeting after two and a half years of discussion and entered the international standard draft stage, the process immediately preceding the publication of international standards.

The above standard is a standard for safety design methods, such as automatically moving a self-driving vehicle to the shoulder of the road when an abnormality occurs.

This standard is a core standard that must be applied to autonomous driving systems at Level 3 or higher, and is expected to have an absolute impact on the design, development, and evaluation of autonomous driving systems and components in the future. It is also expected to contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of domestic companies in the Level 3 market that is opening up in earnest.

In addition, the Korea Testing & Research Institute held a bilateral working-level meeting with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at the conference venue.Choi proposed the establishment of a Korea-US Autonomous Vehicle Standardization Forum.

It was also reported that the two countries agreed to jointly develop a roadmap for standardizing autonomous vehicles to harmonize core autonomous driving standards, such as cooperative driving levels, cybersecurity, and AI, and to strengthen global competitiveness, and discussed ways for the two countries to cooperate in international standardization organizations.

Jin Jong-wook, President of the Korea Agency for Technology and Standards, stated, "As we transition to the future automobile industry, the role and influence of automotive standards are growing greater than ever. We will actively support the integration of our autonomous driving technology into international standards and expand standards cooperation with the United States to help companies enter the global market."
