In an era of global technological hegemony, where economic security and technological sovereignty are becoming increasingly important, a forum will be held to discuss the future direction of development in national strategic technologies and mechanical technologies.

The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (President Sang-jin Park) will hold the '2023 Global Forum on Mechanical Engineering' simultaneously online and offline on the 14th at the National Assembly Museum (formerly the Constitution Memorial Hall) in Yeouido, Seoul, under the theme of 'National Strategic Technology and Mechanical Technology.'

This forum, sponsored by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Council of Science and Technology, is co-hosted by the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), Representatives Lee Sang-min and Cho Seung-rae of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Representative Kim Young-sik of the People Power Party, and will invite domestic and international experts in mechanical technology to explore strategies and directions for future industrial innovation, focusing on “national strategic technologies.”

Next, Professor Jeong-Hoon Cheon of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States will give the keynote speech. Professor Jeong-Hoon Cheon, who previously served as a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Seoul National University and as vice president of Sutek Corporation, will present his keynote address on the topic of “Global Powerhouses’ Manufacturing Technology Strengthening Policies and Our Response Measures.”

Additionally, Hyundai Motor Company Robotics Lab Director Dong-jin Hyun will present on the robot intelligence society realized through Hyundai Motor Company's technological convergence, and Professor Timothy Lieuwen, Director of the Energy Strategy Institute at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States, will also give an online presentation as a speaker.

At the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, President Sangjin Park will speak as a speaker and introduce 'KIMM2050 - National Strategic Technology and the Role of the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials', and share the direction of the KIMM's research and development.

The forum's final session will feature a panel discussion led by Professor Jeong-Hoon Cheon of MIT, Executive Director Dong-Jin Hyun of Hyundai Motor Company, Advisor Jeong-Rak Son of Doosan Energy, and President Sang-Jin Park of the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials. The panel discussion is expected to share experiences and insights from their respective fields and foster an in-depth exchange of opinions on the future direction of global strategic technology.

President Park Sang-jin said, “KIMM is leading the way in conducting mission-oriented research on 20 key technologies in 8 fields, including semiconductors, displays, advanced robots, and manufacturing, among the 12 national strategic technologies and 50 key technologies.” He added, “This forum will be an opportunity to explore various strategies for research and development of mechanical technology, which is the foundation of the global competition to secure strategic technologies, which is accelerating with the enactment of special laws.”

Meanwhile, the '2023 Global Mechanical Technology Forum' celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials has been hosting an international academic forum every year to invite global experts from industry, research, and academia to discuss future issues and current affairs in the field of mechanical technology.
