TI Launches Industry's Smallest 12A Synchronous Buck Regulator with PMBus™ Interface

TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr) March 24, 2014 – TI (CEO Kent Chon) has launched the industry's smallest 12A synchronous DC/DC buck converter with PMBus interface. The new SWIFT TPS53915 converter is offered in a miniature PowerStack™ QFN package and integrates NexFET™ MOSFETs, making it ideal for driving ASICs used in space-constrained applications requiring high power density, such as wireless/wireline communications, enterprise/cloud computing, and storage systems. Combined with TI's WEBENCH™ online design tool, it simplifies power conversion design work and reduces time to market.
TI demonstrated the TPS53915 at the APEC (Applied Power Electronics Conference and Expo) trade show held in Fort Worth, Texas, USA from March 17-19.
The newly launched highly integrated converter features a reference voltage with 0.5% high accuracy, meeting voltage requirements for ultra-fine sub-micron processors. Using D-CAP3™ adaptive on-time control, this converter is easy to design, provides very fast load transient response, and minimizes external component count. Additionally, PMBus programming and fault reporting capabilities simplify power supply design while further reducing component count. (Watch demo video for TPS53915)
For analog applications that do not use PMBus control, TI offers SWIFT pin-to-pin compatible 8A TPS53513 and 12A TPS53515 buck converters. More detailed information about TI's SWIFT products is available here.
The TPS53915 supports 12A output current through integrated high-side/low-side MOSFETs and simplifies power supply design with an on-chip PMBus interface. The D-CAP3 adaptive on-time control mode dramatically reduces output capacitor requirements and requires no external loop compensation, minimizing external component count. It also provides high light-load efficiency with auto-skipping Eco-mode™ and is housed in a 28-pin 3.5mm x 4.5mm x 1mm PowerStack QFN package that stacks TI's NexFET power MOSFETs over a grounded lead frame and interconnects them using copper clips. This combination of stacking and bonding enables a compact and integrated QFN (quad flat no-lead) package compared to other solutions that arrange MOSFETs side by side. Additionally, no external compensation components are required, and it provides internal soft start, input low-voltage protection, integrated bootstrap capacitor, and thermal shutdown features.
The TPS53915 DC/DC converter is available in volume through TI and authorized TI distributors, with pricing at $3.51 per unit in quantities of 1,000. A single synchronous step-down converter evaluation module is now available for order.
