TI Surpasses 100,000 Screens for Digital Cinema Projectors Featuring Award-Winning DLP Cinema® Technology
TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ), April 2, 2014 – TI (CEO Kent Chon) announced that its DLP Cinema technology is being used in over 100,000 movie theater screens worldwide. More than 80% of movie screens globally, ranging from art house theaters to multiplexes, rely on DLP Cinema technology, signifying that the technology opens up new possibilities for the large-screen content experience. TI and its customers Barco, Christie, and NEC showcased their latest projector models at CinemaCon® 2014, a film industry trade show held in Las Vegas, USA. In addition, innovative laser light source models were also demonstrated.
John Fithian, President and Chief Executive Officer of NATO (National Association of Theatre Owners), said, “Digital cinema innovation has raised the standards for quality and picture consistency in theaters around the world. More than ever before, today’s audiences can experience exactly what filmmakers intended to express on screen, wherever they are.” He added, “On behalf of NATO and its members worldwide, I congratulate the TI DLP Cinema team and our clients Barco, Christie, and NEC on their significant contributions to the film industry.”
Digital cinema is ushering in a new era where what an artist envisions can be realized in realistic quality images, such as digital 3D or HFR (High Frame Rate). For directors and content creators, features of DLP cinema technology such as high speed (144Hz) and excellent brightness are laying the foundation for the film industry to stay a step ahead of other alternatives for viewing content, including home entertainment.
The ability to continuously screen movies and other content in their original, pristine state without quality degradation from the first day to the last can be an advantage for movie theaters. In particular, all projectors equipped with DLP Cinema technology comply with DCI standards, are unrestricted by light sources, and provide award-winning, outstanding color reproduction.
Furthermore, digital cinema enables audiences to experience visuals beyond what can be experienced through home theaters or mobile devices. DLP cinema technology is used to project on all IMAX® Digital and other premium large screens. DLP cinema technology makes possible augmented reality and interactivity, as well as holographic-style projections.
Dave Duncan, Product Manager for DLP Cinema and Professional Displays/DLP Front Projection at TI, stated, “Based on this groundbreaking technology, it is now possible to bring the filmmaker’s imagination to life in almost every movie theater around the world.” He added, “What the DLP Cinema team is most excited to celebrate is that, as a result of over 10 years of research, development, and innovation, we are now able to bring joy to millions of movie fans.”
From S2K models designed exclusively for small screens to 4K models evolved for premium large screens, DLP cinema technology is being used in movie theater projectors worldwide, with the number exceeding 100,000. This signifies the dawn of the digital era in the film industry. According to data from the Theatre Distribution List database, 21,927 state-of-the-art DLP cinema screens were installed globally during the one-year period from March 1, 2013, to March 1, 2014. The Asia-Pacific region saw the highest number of new screen installations during this period, with a total of 8,780 screens installed, representing a 38% growth. The EMEA region followed, installing over 6,474 screens over the year. South America installed 3,766 state-of-the-art screens, demonstrating a remarkable growth rate of nearly 75%. The number of IMAX digital screens equipped with DLP cinema technology surged to 692 theaters worldwide (354 in North America and 338 across all regions).
