Freescale Announces IoT Gateway Platform for One-Box Solutions to Accelerate Service Deployment for the Internet of Things
April 14, 2014, Seoul, Korea – Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL), which is continuously working to build a secure and open infrastructure for providing IoT (Internet of Things) services, today unveiled a hardware platform that forms the basis of the one-box concept at the 2014 Freescale Technology Forum.
The IoT gateway, which was a major topic of discussion at today's 2014 Freescale Technology Forum session, is a flexible hardware platform designed to run software from multiple vendors and securely deliver IoT services to end users in homes, businesses, or other locations, enabling the rapid delivery of a wide range of innovative IoT services.
The platform demo marks a significant milestone in Freescale's One Box strategy. Freescale developed this strategy in collaboration with Oracle and ARM to focus on building a secure, standardized, and open infrastructure model for IoT service delivery. This concept establishes an open, common framework for secure IoT service delivery and management by combining standard end-to-end software with an integrated IoT gateway design. A “box” (or service gateway) built on this platform can integrate boxes from multiple IoT service providers into a single device capable of supporting multiple service providers.

Freescale plans to supply a new platform in the fourth quarter of 2014 that includes a software suite that integrates and pre-validates security and connectivity components, enabling developers to add value through application software development and the connectivity of new edge node products.
This platform is equipped with the Freescale i.MX 6 application processor designed based on the ARM Cortex®-A9 core, runs on Oracle Java SE Embedded, and is suitable for basic networking and sensor connectivity. This solution supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth® Low Energy, and 802.15.4 wireless interfaces. In addition, the initial Freescale IoT Gateway platform includes ARM Sensinode™ NanoServices software and Freescale-based processing, as well as Oracle Event Processing for Oracle Java Embedded, enabling rapid response at the gateway level.
The first product platform to be released consists of a fanless gateway based on a low-power i.MX 6 series processor with dimensions of 5.3″W x 3.9″D x 0.8″T, enabling excellent 802.11b/g/n support through Bluetooth Low Energy and 802.15.4 (including ZigBee protocol) accessories and software. Additionally, the system can be configured as a Continua® Healthcare Compliant gateway for interoperability with home medical devices. To build embedded applications that filter, associate, and process events in real time, Oracle software, including Oracle Java SE Embedded and Oracle Event Processing for Oracle Java Embedded, can be pre-integrated into the application development framework, and end-to-end web services optimized for resource-constrained edge nodes are provided via ARM Sensinode's NanoServices.
