Linear 50V, 2A Internal Switch Dual Multi-Topology DC/DC Converter Launch

April 11, 2014 – Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-kwak) announced the launch of a dual DC/DC converter (product name: LT8471) featuring 2A internal switches at 50V and an additional 500mA switch, capable of being configured for step-down, step-up, and inverting conversion. Each 2A channel can be independently configured as a buck, boost, SEPIC, flyback, ZETA, or inverting DC/DC converter. The wide range of topologies and output configurations make it ideal for a broad range of industrial and automotive applications. The LT8471 operates within an input voltage range of 2.6V to 50V, making it ideal for applications with input ranges spanning from single-cell lithium-ion to automotive batteries.
The 50V internal switches of the LT8471 can accommodate applications with high input and output voltages up to 45V. This device can generate both positive and negative outputs from a single converter, making it ideal for a wide range of bias applications. The compact integrated 500mA boost converter achieves optimal efficiency in buck converters and inverting converters using a single inductor. The LT8471's switching frequency can be programmed or synchronized within the range of 100kHz to 2MHz, keeping external components very small. The combination of a TSSOP package and minimal external components ensures a very compact footprint while minimizing solution cost.
The high-efficiency 50V switches of the LT8471 achieve overall efficiency up to 85% in buck and inverting applications. Within a 6V to 32V input range, the LT8471 achieves 1.5A at 5V and 650mA at -5V. Power good pins on each channel are provided for easy use when event-based sequencing is required. The LT8471's switching frequency can be programmed with a single resistor or synchronized to an external clock between 100kHz and 2MHz, minimizing external component size and avoiding "noise-sensitive" frequency bands. Antiphase switching minimizes input ripple. Undervoltage and overvoltage lockout (UVLO/OVLO) are user-adjustable to suit optimal system performance. Additional features include external synchronization capability, soft start, and frequency foldback function.
The LT8471EFE is available in a 20-pin thermally enhanced TSSOP package, and all versions including the industrial temperature (-40°C to 125°C) version LT8471IFE are now immediately available.
