Nokia has expanded its IP router portfolio with the launch of the new 7730 SXR (Service Interconnect Router) family.

Nokia announced on the 20th that it has launched the 7730 SXR (Service Interconnect Router) platform, which can provide service routing in an innovative way for IP Access and Aggregation networks.

While today's networks are widely recognized as critical infrastructure, their architecture is changing. The acceleration of broadband access network deployments, including 5G, requires networks with higher capacity.

Current IP access and aggregation routers are generally optimized for simple IP transport applications. As network architectures evolve, new protocols and service requirements may arise. Frequent changes to accommodate these changes can increase costs.

Accordingly, it has become crucial to provide secure and reliable connectivity on platforms that leverage the latest network operations and have silicon chips and software that are flexible enough to easily adapt to new requirements. This requires a new approach to IP routing in the networking domain.

The new platform will enable customers currently using Nokia IP Edge and Core to bring the performance, security, assurance and sustainability of Nokia Services Routers to advanced IP access and aggregation networks.

It is also suitable for deployment in small-scale, distributed IP edge networks. Consequently, it is expected to meet the growing capacity and functionality demands resulting from increased investment in communications networks and the evolution of cloud network architectures.

The 7730 SXR system is powered by Nokia's new FPcx routing silicon, a line of high-performance, in-house designed network processors. These chips are optimized for IP access, aggregation, and edge applications, and are housed in a scalable, compact package. The 7730 SXR family is also available with SR Linux, Nokia's open network operating system (NOS).

Nokia said, “As applications evolve to a cloud-native approach and edge cloud adoption grows, networks must become more agile and cloud-like.” It also said, “The rapid proliferation of end devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets is increasing the potential points of cyberattacks and requiring preparedness for internet security threats.”
