Rockwell Automation and Hanwha Power Systems join forces to automate hydrogen co-firing power generation systems.

Rockwell Automation announced on the 24th that it has signed a strategic partnership with Hanwha Power Systems and agreed to cooperate in supplying automation solutions and equipment required for hydrogen co-firing power generation systems. Hanwha Power Systems is an energy equipment company capable of designing and manufacturing industrial high-pressure gas compressors in-house.

Hydrogen co-firing power generation refers to a power generation method that produces electricity by burning hydrogen and natural gas (LNG) together in a gas turbine.

Through this MOU, Rockwell Automation plans to cooperate with Hanwha Power Systems in supplying reliable PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) for hydrogen co-firing power generation systems. In addition, they will share expert knowledge to support the expansion of Hanwha Power Systems' hydrogen co-firing gas turbine power generation business and its entry into the North American market. Both companies stated, “We expect this agreement to contribute to the establishment of a hydrogen co-firing power generation system and to help us enter the U.S. hydrogen market, which is recognized as a future technology.”

Jeong Do-cheol, Senior Vice President at Hanwha Power Systems, stated, “We have made stable and efficient hydrogen co-firing power generation possible by utilizing Rockwell Automation’s world-class automation solutions.” He added, “Hydrogen co-firing power generation is becoming increasingly important for practicing sustainable carbon neutrality and achieving the 2030 National Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target (NDC). We plan to strengthen our competitiveness in the decarbonized power generation market by actively investing in the hydrogen co-firing business and securing core technologies in the future.”

Lee Yong-ha, CEO of Rockwell Automation Korea, said, “As the climate crisis intensifies, reducing carbon emissions is becoming a critical task for companies worldwide. There is also a growing trend in the manufacturing sector to show great interest in adopting renewable energy for carbon neutrality.” He added, “Based on specialized solutions and know-how, Rockwell Automation will successfully supply stable PLCs for the construction of Hanwha Power Systems’ hydrogen co-firing power generation systems as needed, and contribute to plans to enter the North American market.”
