AWS Supports AWS Direct Connect at ICN10 in Seoul

Leveraging dedicated lines...optimizing hybrid IT solutions

Digital Realty's data center in Seoul will enable AWS customers to optimize their hybrid IT solutions by connecting directly to AWS.

Digital Realty held an online conference on the 7th and announced that it will support the new AWS Direct Connect On-Ramp at its ICN10 data center in Seoul, allowing customers to access Amazon Web Services (AWS) services through a single cross-connection.

Digital Realty stated, “Now, Digital Realty’s Seoul customers can build private infrastructure by connecting their private infrastructure to AWS Asia Pacific (Seoul),” adding, “They can optimize hybrid architecture solutions and take advantage of low-latency, high-performance, secure, and cost-effective connectivity to AWS.”

Recently, the number has increased exponentially As data intensity intensifies, many companies are adopting hybrid IT architectures that leverage both on-premises and public clouds, along with cloud adoption, to handle data management more deeply. In particular, as Korea's importance as a new and growing data center hub continues to grow, the scale of domestic data exchange and demand for related data center services are expected to expand significantly in the coming years.

Digital Realty said that a leased data center, called a multi-tenant data center (MTDC), would be an effective way for companies to deploy this architecture. MTDC allows companies to build and manage all network infrastructure from a single location.

Digital Realty provides exclusive access to AWS Direct Connect to its domestic data center customers through PlatformDIGITAL®, its global data center platform. This connects service providers and enterprises. Network service providers can leverage the robust connectivity on the platform to offer services to enterprises.

Direct Connect overcomes the shortcomings of existing public clouds by building a fixed network, rather than an internet-based one, to provide high throughput and consistency. It is a dedicated line service that delivers minimal network latency and stable communication quality.

This allows customers to isolate sensitive data traffic, enhancing security and privacy. It also provides low-latency, high-bandwidth interconnectivity to ensure secure access from the public internet. Moving large workloads is also seamless, reducing data transfer costs by up to two-thirds.

“AWS Direct Connect lets you privately transfer data directly into and out of AWS from your data center, office, or colocation environment,” said Emad Benjamin, General Manager of AWS Direct Connect. Customers can choose dedicated 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, or 100 Gbps connections, or work with AWS Direct Connect providers like Digital Realty to access hosted connections with bandwidth ranging from 50 Mbps to 10 Gbps.

Digital Realty said it will be able to connect to the AWS global network at ICN10 in Sangam DMC, Seoul, build a hybrid network, and extend its existing network to AWS to process large-scale data sets in the petabyte range.

Digital Realty said, "For enterprise customers, connecting to AWS Direct Connect from just one location is not enough. It makes sense to interconnect more than one location because of the lack of resiliency."

Meanwhile, Digital Realty is the world's largest provider of cloud and network-neutral data centers, as well as colocation and interconnection solutions. It operates over 300 global data center platforms in 50 cities worldwide, including Korea, serving over 5,000 customers.

With the addition of Seoul as an onramp, Digital Realty's PlatformDigital now hosts AWS Direct Connect Cloud Onramps in 17 cities worldwide. Customers can leverage virtual access to AWS Direct Connect in all regions through ServiceFabric™, Digital Realty's interconnection and orchestration solution.
