June 9, 2014 – QuickLogic Corporation (NASDAQ: QUIK), a leader in low-power Customer Specific Standard Products (CSSP), announced the launch of the 'S1 Wearable Sensor Hub,' an ultra-low-power situational awareness sensor hub optimized for next-generation wearable applications. Available for immediate use as a finished product, this solution enables OEMs developing next-generation wearable applications, particularly for health and fitness, to accelerate time-to-market.
The S1 wearable sensor hub uses QuickLogic’s ArcticLink® 3 S1 silicon platform as the latest Catalog CSSP (Catalog CSSP: a device designed to meet common elements according to customer requirements and available for immediate purchase without any additional customization process) and is scalable in line with QuickLogic’s roadmap for future sensor hub silicon platforms. According to market research firm NPD DisplaySearch, the wearable device market is expected to expand from $48 million in 2014 to $91 million in 2015.
The ArcticLink 3 S1 wearable turnkey catalog CSSP solution supports context-aware functions such as walking, running, cycling, inside a vehicle, being worn by a person, and being attached to an object, as well as gesture functions such as Tap-to-Wake and Rotate-Wrist-to-Wake. For user functions, it supports a pedometer with individual step counting for running and walking, and the operating system supports Android 4.4 (KitKat) and Thread X RTOS (Real-Time Operating System). It consumes less than 250µW of active power.
Because features for various common contextual information and gestures are natively supported, OEMs can develop smarter, more accurate, and intuitive fitness and health applications for a wide range of activities. Furthermore, the S1 wearable sensor hub incorporates QuickLogic's unique system timing and control implementation technologies for the low-power architecture of wearable devices. In addition, QuickLogic's sensor hub handles real-time always-on computation processing, which reduces overall system power consumption and extends battery life.
"The wearable market, which is still in its early stages, is a market that can bring opportunities to create many new applications for QuickLogic's ultra-low power situational awareness sensor hub solutions," said Brian Faith, Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing at QuickLogic. “This highly segmented market is expected to grow rapidly,” they stated. “The S1 wearable ultra-low power sensor hub, specifically customized for the wearable market, combines context awareness and gesture recognition capabilities to enable OEMs to offer differentiated products.”
