Domestic and international ICT standards experts gathered to discuss global standardization strategies and cooperation plans.

Korea has succeeded in hosting an international standardization conference in the IT field again for the first time in 12 years, following 2012.

The National Radio Research Institute (Director Seo Seong-il) of the Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 20th that it has secured the hosting rights for the 48th International Standardization Meeting in the Information Technology (IT) field (ISO/IEC JTC 1), scheduled to be held in November 2024.

This is an achievement made by the Korean delegation (headed by Lee Seung-yoon, principal at the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) attending the 46th ISO/IEC JTC 1 General Assembly held in Berlin, Germany from November 13 to 17.

The 48th General Assembly, which will be hosted in Korea in 2024, is scheduled to be held in conjunction with the Global ICT Standards Conference (GISC), the largest domestic event related to standards and patents hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

This is expected to become an international networking venue where domestic and international ICT standards experts gather to discuss global standardization strategies and cooperation plans in the era of digital transformation.

ISO/IEC JTC 1 is a joint technical committee between the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that oversees international standardization in key digital transformation technologies such as artificial intelligence and smart cities, and consists of 23 subcommittees (SC, SuIt consists of a Committee and four direct working groups (WG).

The ISO/IEC JTC 1 General Assembly is an important policy meeting attended by over 150 representatives from more than 40 member countries and international organizations such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the World Economic Forum (WEF) to decide on the establishment of global standardization strategies for new technologies and the creation of new committees.

Seo Seong-il, President of the National Radio Research Institute, stated, “ISO/IEC JTC 1 is a committee that oversees the development, maintenance, promotion, and establishment of standardization strategies for core technologies in digital transformation. Hosting this general assembly will serve as an opportunity for Korea to lead international standardization in the information technology (IT) sector and enhance its international standing.”

Meanwhile, at the 46th General Assembly, Korea contributed to the establishment of international standardization strategies in the IT field by submitting numerous contributions aimed at improving the decision-making and structure of JTC 1, which is becoming increasingly complex due to national interests, including: simplifying the policy-making structure to respond proactively to environmental changes; establishing procedures to meet the requirements of the market and customers; and clarifying the roles and responsibilities of subgroups to improve the efficiency of organizational operations.

In addition, Korea achieved a great feat by strengthening its status as a leader in international standardization, such as by assuming the role of convener (Professor Kyu-Won Shim, Yonsei University College of Medicine) of the 3D Printing and Scanning Working Group (JTC 1/WG 12), which was established in 2018 and has been actively led by Korea.
