TI Introduces Compact 1A and 4A Buck-Boost Regulators for Space Savings and Extended Battery Life

TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr) June 17, 2014 – TI (CEO Kent Chon) announced the expansion of its leading converter portfolio by introducing 1A and 4A buck-boost regulators that deliver best-in-class performance in the industry's smallest form factor. The 1A TPS63050 and 4A TPS630250 single inductor devices are designed to extend battery life in a wide range of lithium-ion battery-powered applications, from portable medical equipment to point-of-sale (POS) terminals. These devices achieve high efficiency reaching up to 95% while occupying a footprint less than half the size of other available solutions.
The TPS630250 converter with 4A switch supports a wide input voltage range of 2.3V to 5.5V. Additionally, the converter maintains excellent light-load efficiency and a standby current of 35A, and can operate even in the region where the lithium battery voltage is 2.5V or lower. Furthermore, as a 2.5MHz device, this product achieves a DC/DC buck-boost solution size of 33mm², which is less than half the footprint achievable with conventional 4A products.
The TPS630250 achieves maximum power efficiency of 95% and provides high output current capacity, delivering excellent efficiency across most load current ranges. For example, it can support 3A at 3.3V output in step-down mode and currents higher than 2A at 3.3V output in boost mode. It also maintains high efficiency across the entire load current range through low-power mode while achieving the industry's lowest standby quiescent current of 35A. As a 2.5MHz converter in a 1.766mm x 2.086mm x 0.5mm CSP package, it offers an ultra-compact, ultra-thin solution size of 33mm2.
TI provides the industry's most comprehensive DC/DC converter product portfolio, including buck-boost, step-down, and boost architectures, meeting all the requirements demanded in portable power applications. TI also offers switched-mode battery charger products, including the newly introduced bq24192 4.5A single-cell USB/adapter charger, enabling faster charging of portable electronic devices with high power conversion efficiency.
